I was a corpsman and there was a joke we used to play on newly ariving physicians who were exactly the tha saltiest of a sailors. A HN1 would remark that this was a very black day in the history of the Navy. The new physican would ask

"Why it was a black day?"

" Sir, on this date in 1862 the navy abolished flogging which resulted in some very deleterious effects on naval social relations. sir " the HN1 said.

The Physician would be non-plussed by the comment ask,

" So abolishing flogging created social conflicts?"

" Yes Sir..abolishing flogging but a very large dent in the love lives of Chief Bosun's Mates, Sir"

( Needless to say this bit of schtick was never attempted arround bosun's mates.)
