Iraqi Children to Participate in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts |
| BAGHDAD, Iraq, March 2, 2004 Thousands of children throughout Iraq will soon be able to participate in an Iraqi Boy Scout and Girl Scout program, according to Coalition Provisional Authority officials.
The scouting initiative was launched recently with the backing of the World Scouting Organization, the Arab Scout Organization, and some 100 former scouters serving in Iraq. |
|
| The program will allow boys and girls of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds to join together in activities that promote good citizenship, community service, honor, and self-confidence.
Volunteer scouting was first introduced to Iraq in 1921 but was terminated during the Saddam Hussein era. Coalition officials said the reestablishment of scouting signals a brighter future for Iraq's youth and is another step forward in reconnecting Iraq with the world community. |

Excellent, very good to hear. I have one son who is an Eagle Scout, and my other son is currently working on his Eagle Scout project.

The Girls Scouts in the US are a training ground for feminists. I wonder how that will resolve in the Iraqi version?

I said this was a great idea months ago. Different troops from different areas will come together and help build unity in the country. Or at least blow themselves up early.

Good news! I was a girl scout leader, and had a blast teaching the girls things about our constitution they never learned in school.

I am an Eagle Scout, and have been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since I was an 8 year old Cub Scout.
Often at Scout camp trips, we have non-denominational Chapel services. There is often a "pass the scout hat" collection at these services. The money is for something called the "World Frendship Fund."
The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America World Friendship Fund is to donate money to help establish Scout programs around the globe.
Quite often, we hear stories prior to the collection at these Chapel services about countries in the Eastern Bloc. When Communism came into these countries, the Scouting movements in those countries that had existed, some dating back to when Robert Baden-Powell founded the movement in England in 1907, were pronounced illegal. The youths of these new Communist nations had their own indictination program for young boys. The same is true in Germany when Hitler replaced them with the "Hitler Youth," etc.
When Communism fell roughly 10-15 years ago in these nations, the Scouting movement went in to try to restart these programs which had been illegal since the mid to late 1940s. At many start-up meetings, kids showed up to these meetings wearing parts of their grandfather's scout uniform from 50 years before. Others had books, or manuals, or other Scout related items. Their relatives had hid these items away for 50 years, even though it was a crime to do so under the reign of Communism. That is how much the Scout movement means to people around the World.
My dad has been an adult Scouter for many years. One of his favorite posessions is a fleur-de-lis Scout pin from Slovakia that he traded some patches for with Slovakian scouts. It is his reminder of the story I have told you and the power of the World Scouting movement.
It comes as no surprise that Scouting wants to return to a nation where like Iraq where being a Scout was most certainly illegal (Saddam probably had his own "Hitler Youth"-esque program). I wish them all the luck in the world in getting that program started. I also look forward to the day where at an international Scout event I can meet Iraqi scouts. I've met scouts from Canada, England, Trinidad & Tobago, Slovakia, Mexico, Australia, Zimbabwe, Finland, Sweden, Ghana, and many other places, but no Iraq (yet).

Hopefully, the Iraqi Boyscouts will not expect Honor Badges for stoning Iraqi Girlscouts.

This is wonderful. Nothing better than the scouts to promote good citizenship. It teaches self sufficiency, honor, integrity and helping others. This is GREAT!

You just nailed it. That's why the American Left simply can't tolerate Scouting.

From a mom who has an Eagle Scout with bronze palm, this news is good to hear. However, I can imagine the queers going crazy and pulling out their peverted hair, if any, over this news.

I hope they can find enough gay scoutmasters to be role models.

And there at least for now they can let the beauty of scouting develop without worry about Gay issues etc.
Thanks for ping Ragtime

I was a Boy Scout. I think it's a great institution.
They might have to add some new merit badges for the Iraqi Scouts though- minefield self extraction, first aid for trauma injuries, defusing an improvised explosive device, move under direct fire etc ;-)

Saw this story at work and forwarded it onto the District Executive via email. Had no sooner done that than I heard Rush talking about it and how the Liberals just don't get it. With Scouts starting only good will come out of this and Iraq is not a quagmire.
