Actually, the town is Saint-Maximim-La-Sainte-Baume, and the relics of Ste Marie-Madeleine are in the Basilica along those of St Maximin and others. The ancient and persistent legend tells of Saint Mary Magdelene and the Bethany family came to Gaul around year 45. Mary Magdelene lived out the rest of her days in spiritual solitude and contemplation in the hills/mountains outside of the town known today as the Massif Sainte Baume. The mountain grotto and chapel where she was said to have lived was a very famous pilgrimage site, visited by the faithful, including several kings.

I was up there a couple years ago, and sadly the area has been closed due to rock slides. Of course I visited anyway. The grotte and the surrounding ridges are stunningly beautiful and pure, and still make for a very moving spiritual experience for the faithful.
