Anyone who is on this thread and who hasn't read the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars, Blue Mars, Green Mars) should. Especially Red Mars.Yes. Very well-written books (there is also an extra book that deals with short stories that weren't included in the trilogy, that kind of pad the characters out).
Sometimes the politics were a little too much - either swinging wildly to the extreme right (don't trust the government, people take care of themselves, libertarian, etc.) or to the extreme left (%99 of corporations are evil, envirowhackos, etc.), or combining the two with no middle ground, but it wasn't too overbearing and it added to the characters..
The science of the novel was very interesting and a good read on the potential of engineering over the next 50 years. Robinson really did a good job of fleshing out a heckuva lot of characters.
I thought the most interesting parts were the space elevator and what effects that anti-aging procedures would have on the world.

"Would the water have all evaporated into space?" According to the paper at this link, water is disassociated into H, H2, and O by the UV light that reaches the surface. These lighter species can reach escape velocity because of Mars' reduced gravity.
It's an interesting paper.
