Moviegoers object to '666' on tickets for 'Passion'

Tickets at one movie theater screening Mel Gibson's ``The Passion of the Christ'' are being deemed decidedly unholy. The number 666, which many Christians recognize as the ``mark of the beast,'' is appearing on movie tickets for Gibson's film at a Georgia theater, drawing complaints from some moviegoers. The machine that prints tickets assigned the number 666 as a prefix on all the tickets for the film, said Gary Smith, owner of the Movies at Berry Square in northwest Georgia. The 666 begins a series of numbers that are listed below the name of the movie, the date, time and price. ``It's from our computer and it's absolutely a coincidence,'' Smith said. ``It has nothing to do with the film company or any vendor. It's completely in our computer.''

Don't ya think that maybe they just got another roll of tickets out of a box when the old one ran out, and some kid at the teller loaded them without even looking at them?

Part of effectively combatting biased behavior is to be restrained, so that you are not seen to be hypersensitive and your words dismissed on those grounds.

Aren't the chances a lot higher than 1 in 1,000? It seems I recall some stats formula that would drive the number higher, but stats was a long time ago and my mind may just be wandering.
Either way, I agree that this is inappropriate for this movie. Putting the mark of the beast (anti-christ) on a ticket to a movie that realistically depicts the death of Christ is unnerving at best!

Oh for crying out loud. This is the type of thing that makes devout Christians get a reputation for being kooks. Sheesh!

Who gains by promoting the reality that it was 'chance'?
I would argue that it wasn't "chance," but instead chance. All I have to gain is noting the truth.

That's nothing.
The Pick 4 in New Jersey on August 8, 1988 was 8888. Figure the odds on -that-.

True. Very true. (I've been working on this lately, but it doesn't show very well sometimes.)

Eh, just thought about it, and I -know- some wiseass is going to come along and say "1 in 10,000".
Sure - the odds that the Pick 4 will have that day's date on any given day is 1 in 10,000. But consider that the date in question is the same number all the way across. Now, there's only about 11 dates like that in a given -century-... multiply that by 1 in 10,000, and now you start getting some pretty nasty odds :)

Only if that roll was pre-printed with the sequence number. And if so, that's surely a fair probability, given my experiences at movie ticket windows of late. But, for years now, all the numbers I have seen on tickets are all computer generated. *shrug*

"As someone who knows a LOT about computers, thus is not likely. "
Hmm...more silliness.
Let's look at a scenario about how computer-generated tickets might be numbered.
Let's say that the three digit number preceding the ticket numbers represents the number of films shown in that theater, either for the year or for another, perhaps longer, time period.
First film would be 001. Second film would be 002, and so on. If the Passion was the 666th film, a ticket number might be something like 666-123. Another ticket for the same showing would be 666-124.
As someone who knows computers VERY well, this is a likely scenario.
As someone who is not looking for conspirators in every moving theater computer, I think his is just a silly coincidence.

I see a conspiracy developing where there is none. Here's the deal, when you claim some level of experetise and understanding, then state nothing but a hunch, Freepers will grill you.
With a three digit prefix, the chance of it coming out "666" is the same as 123, 444, or 736---1 in a 1000. That doesn't mean there is nothing to this. It just means that discounting chance is not so easy.

The odds are the same as it being any other possible number on any other day.

Given your tagline, should any of us expected anything else?
We Freepers, silly christians and silly aetheists all, we tend to be pretty consistent.

Most of the ones I've seen are pre-printed, with the only thing getting printed at the time of sale was the movie name, time and amount. I suppose satan might have been able to figure out when the movie was going to show, and rigged the tickets, or a demon-spawned leftist controlled by the dark one...who knows...
