[history]
March 1, 2004 -- Edward Cardinal Egan gave "The Passion of the Christ" a thumbs-up from the pulpit yesterday, urging parishioners to see Mel Gibson's controversial movie. "It's good that we see that movie because that movie tells us about the greatest prayer, the greatest sacrifice that was ever made," said Egan. "The victim was Jesus Christ, the priest was Jesus Christ, he offered himself."

Exhortation is certainly better than that lame statement he put out the other day, which said (I paraphrase) that Jesus was murdered, but that no one did it. This is new theology to me, and new physics, the idea that you can have an act without an actor. Acquinas must be spinning in his grave!

I suspect he meant that the Christ laid down His life, no one took it from Him. Dang, if that isn't scriptural....

Egan put his finger in the air and felt which way the wind blew. He is a complete, effete phony. V's wife.

You have described the majority of the Catholic hierarchy in this country since the late 60s when they all became liberal social workers

Better late than never. Maybe this movie will give the bishops some backbone.

Some people just can't switch out of critical mode . . .

Some here would disagree.

Some here would disagree. No doubt. Some here also think JPII is a disgrace. Some here think a lot of strange things.

Egan put his finger in the air and felt which way the wind blew. He is a complete, effete phony. He has such a pompous, stentorian delivery. I shouldn't judge someone on such a superficiality, I suppose, but what you say rings true.
The late Cardinal O'Connor had a much more natural style.
