Need help with Internet Explorer error(.dll file)

Every time I get on the internet and type in the address for freerepublic.com(so far this is the only address where I receive the error) I get an error that says 'IE has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL' and then the window will automatically close. Can anyone tell me why I receive this error, why it only happens with freerepublic, and what I can do about it? I actually got into the site(in order to post this) by typing in the address to my personal page and then linking to the rest of the site. For some reason the site links will work when I right click them and open them in a new window but not when I simply click on them.

Run Windows Update (or go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and get all of the latest updates (including IE 6.0, which will replace mshtml.dll).

Alternative: Download and install both Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Run each (clicking their internal "check for updates" buttons first) and make sure you don't have any spyware/adware/malware mucking up your IE.

Another alternative: In IE, click on Tools/Internet Options. Under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files and check the offline content box. When it finishes, close IE and open IE again and see if you still have a problem.

The thing is it only happens with the freerepublic website. At first I thought maybe the guys here were updating the site or something and it was down. That was about 2 or 3 days ago and I still am getting the same error. It's messing up my routine.

Thanks. Seems like the Windows Update option is probably the safe quick bet. And if that doesn't work I'll take your advice on deleting the temp files, etc.

I would also suspect spyware. My kids WinME machine had similar symptoms, SPYBOT and AD-AWARE fixed the IE problem (I personally would *NEVER* use IE Explorer since I long ago ceased to trust M$ -- its Mozilla for me under Linux or Windows...

You can open several windows with IE.

Dittos. Any time ie slows down this is the first suspect.

Go to Add>remove Programs, and choose to remove IE. You'll get a box with a choice to repair IE. Try that first. Hopefully that'll work, but if not you can try the option of downloading IE as stated in the bulletin. I personally use IE6, and the only problem with it is some weird incompatability with the HP bundled version of Easy CD creator.

And don't listen to people saying that ME sucks, and go for Big Brother XP, blah blah. I can direct you to a couple of computer forums I'm a member of, and the XP forums ain't exactly sitting idle and catching dust, know what I mean?

So, uh, let's say he downloads the software you recommend.

What happens if once he installs it, it causes conflicts with other software on his computer?

Where does he get help to track-down and solve such problems so he can get his computer running again?

For the record I just spent the last half hour downloading (7) security updates for my system but did not yet download the IE 6.0 upgrade(although I will eventually...not tonight) and I restarted my computer, connected to the internet, and came straight to Freerepublic without a problem. So I don't know if that means I have spyware on my computer or there were just checks in the system that made sure I didn't open any unsecured sites or what. But thanks for helping me work this out.

Mozilla does have a built-in e-mail program. You don't have to use it unless you want to, though.

You can keep using OE if you want. After you install Mozilla, just fire up OE like normal. You can check in Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs, to make sure your default e-mail program is the one you want.

I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox. http://www.mozilla.org/ The download is smaller and many people like it. It's based on the main Mozilla browser.
