New Paltz, New York-AP) Feb. 28, 2004 - First San Francisco, now New Paltz.
It didn't take long for the word to spread about the gay marriages that were being performed in the New York village that sits along the State Thruway about 75 miles north of New York City.
More than 500 couples are now on a waiting list for Mayor Jason West to marry them. He officiated over 25 such marriages Friday and vows to continue them.
West insists he broke no law. He says he obeyed the state constitution, and his oath of office.
That issue, however, is being debated. Although New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer refused a request from state health officials to block the marriages, he issued no opinion on their legality. He's waiting for the courts to decide that.
West plans no more gay weddings before Monday.
I don't think you understand my point. The NY Atty Gen is just about doing everything he can to help the mayor trash the law without getting his own fingerprints on it. I was just saying what a real attorney general would do. Here in Texas the attorney general didn't have to get involved, because the Travis County Courthouse (in Austin) refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples last week. Of course if Travis County had actually issued licenses, the Attorney General would have had the County Judge arrested.
