MEL'S MOVIE ALSO AROUSES POLITICAL 'PASSION'

February 29, 2004 -- Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" has become such a huge phenomenon so fast that campaign analysts are starting to ponder political fallout on the 2004 election - and some Democrats have got the jitters. "Whenever religion becomes a central topic of discussion, Democrats don't do so well, and now it's really out there," said a Democratic activist, who thinks the film links into concern on gay marriage and even Janet Jackson's breast flash.

Well, Mel can always run for President in 2008.

I don't believe he could being Australian by birth but it would be a hoot to have a Mel/Arnold ticket.

The Democratic strategist also noted that the movie offers a Catholic perspective, and Kerry is Catholic.

Kerry may have been raised a Catholic .. but he works against all the catholic beliefs

My sleep is so screwed up. I am antsy and want to go running but the hour is late and I am afraid to go out at night alone. :)

From article:
Aides say Bush wants to see "The Passion" and probably will. The White House has a private movie theater and wife Laura has said she'd "like to see it."

By contrast, when Democratic front-runner John Kerry was asked if he wanted to see it, he replied cautiously, "I don't know" and added that he's "concerned" the film's portrayal of Jews could fuel anti-Semitism.

That made me laugh. A clearer contrast couldn't have been made if it had been scripted.

But a Democratic strategist says the movie poses real risks for Bush in an election where he hopes to win over swing Catholics - as well as Jews who may be concerned about a film that seems to blame them for the Crucifixion.

"For him to be critical of the movie is to do some damage with his base, and to be uncritical is to do some damage with a group he's trying to move into - winning over Catholics could conflict with winning Jews," the strategist said.

What ridiculous tripe. The movie will have little impact on the election. The box office numbers will do the usual and dampen any negatives associated with the movie.
