"He fell under the weight of the cross, and after being encouraged by John to see her son, Mary knelt next to him and said, "I'm here." Then Jesus said, "Watch as I make all things new," then stood up, hoisting the cross back onto his shoulder, and he literally embraced the cross in a loving way. At that point, I lost it."
Brother, You and I both lost it at that point. Just running it through my mind as I type this, it's hitting me again.

I saw the film Friday. My comments:
The violence is no more than anyone would expect who has read the gospels, is familiar with the Stations of the Cross, the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, the Western Christian art tradition, and the Shroud of Turin. Those who have been shocked by the violence are religious illiterates (and Mel Gibson KNEW they needed this film) and liberals and the victims of liberals whose Christ is a purely spiritual, ideal sort of ethical preacher whose flesh-and-blood reality they have never taken seriously. I am thinking in particular those who have accused Mel Gibson of being a psychotic, exercising a sick fascination with blood and violence.
This movie is not going to cause anyone to freak out. It is a beautiful work of art, aimed at the heart of Western Christians, Protestant and Catholic, who have been victimized by an iconoclastic, church-stripping, statue-smashing liberal clergy.
The liberals hate this film also because of the explicit depiction of Jesus (and MARY) as fully conscious of His mission from His Father, and in control of events.

Has anyone considered that the Shroud of Turin may have influenced Mel's view of the scourging?

But the DVDs won't come out till the movie has finished it's world wide run in theaters. The DVD WILL come out in time for Christmas.

I think this weekend numbers will be huge. One reason being many Church groups have sold out times not normaly deemed movie showing time periods. Our medium sized church sold out 8 screens for 10:00am tomorrow.

Don't let the crowds deter you. More likely than not, you will not find a more pleasant gathering of people anywhere. Just my honest, yet humble opinion.

I'll give you a hint. This movie won't be on DVDs any time soon.
Darn! I want to own this movie (saw it last night) and I want to see it again!

Has anyone considered that the Shroud of Turin may have influenced Mel's view of the scourging?Highly possible.
Observe the Shroud of Turin (back view), particularly the marks of scourging that pretty much cover the body of the man who was wrapped in it, literally from head to foot:

"Hollywood wouldn't give him the time of day. Now they all wish they had received this much publicity and cash flow." The question is not if Dreamworks will hire Gibson, but rather if Gibson want's to hire SKG for HIS new projects. You must remember that the film industry and 95% of the actors are whores. They live in the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills in a way they don't have to see regular folks like us. Once in a while someone pops up to spew their politics around, and it doesn't matter unless you are laying around the house, drinking wine and eating chocolates all day long.

I have chills after reading your comments. In fact, I'm going to cut, paste and send your comments to myself to read again and again.
I know you went to the matinee and I have been waiting for your ping. The wait was worth it. :) Thanks G.

$23,240,000 beats Return of the King's opening friday by a wide margin. This looks huge!

Go to Amazon and search the DVD's for The Passion of the Christ. You can then sign up for Amazon to notify you when the DVD will be available.

To put this into perspective, "Return of the King" also came out on a Wednesday, and made $73,282,370 by Friday. Mel's film is on track to have a comparable run

"I hope he times release of the DVD for Christmas."
That's an excellent idea.
