I'm sure Bill will grab his rifle and run down to back Aristide up just as soon as he can. Of course, Aristide may well not care to trust Clinton around him with a loaded weapon.

Backgrounder? Fast hotbot boolean grab of out top 10:

Perhaps more to the point: the diplomatic situation between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and any indication that the DomRep might be the first to recognize a NRLF provisional government following a Aristide abdication. You aware of any recent articles that might offer clues? It sure is convenient that there's a DomRep Kiowa helicopter that can fly Aristide out before things get too rough... but if the NRLF is serious about being in place by Sunday, that means Aristide would have to fly out tonight or Saturday night at the latest.

Fri Feb 27, 6:47 PM ET Foreign nationals are rushed to a Dominican armed forces helicopter, as they are evacuated from the Dominican Embassy in Port-au-Prince, February 27, 2004. Rebels took over a key crossroads town and edged closer to the capital while supporters of embattled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide mounted defenses Friday against a bloody rebellion that threatened to topple Haiti's government. Foreigners and Haitians have been fleeing the country for days.

Rebel leader Guy Philippe, a former police chief accused of plotting coups who returned from exile in the Dominican Republic to join the 3-week-old revolt, said his men planned to cut off Port-au-Prince from the ocean.

"We going to send some boats ... to block the ships coming from Miami to Port-au-Prince," Philippe told reporters on Friday in the country's second-biggest city, Cap Haitien, which the rebels overran last weekend to control a large swath of the north.

Philippe has said his men had surrounded Port-au-Prince and were awaiting orders to attack.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Philippe's taking on the US Marines, and perhaps the Navy...and telling Reuters his plans?  Funny....Scarlet Pimpernel strategy, pretending to be unwise so the enemy lets his guard down?
This is a mess. I am withholding comment. Was here in 2002 when a few Dems. cruelly helped bring a boatload of Haitian refugees to the e. coast of Florida to disrupt the election, with rent-a-racebaitors ready in advance. Ugly and cruel mischief by very sore losers, with a history of exploiting the weakest, here and abroad, it seems...with little cause or purpose, or concern for the people of Haiti ~ just the pursuit of power for power's sake.
According to your link (thank you for that) we sent over 10,000 troops to prevent the Communist bad guys from winning in the Dominican Republic, 1965. We have 50 Marines saving civilians and defending the embassy in Haiti today. America was different then. The military, not so much different today. They will go, and in larger numbers...to help the suffering Haitians.
I hate it...and will pray extra.
(A-G will be back in  a few days.)
Hati has a capital ?
How could you tell.
It always seems to be generally mass anarchy from one end to the other leading me to wonder how you could to the rebels from the rest of the populace.
Guy Phillippe formerly headed the Cap-Haitien police force, but was discharged by Aristide and left for the Dominican Republic where he resided for the last several years, following Aristide purges of the police and Army after attempts against Aristide's life, one using a .50 Browning machinegun. Phillippe presumably has a few friends in high enough places in the DomRep to have both ensured his safety, and possibly to have at least partially equipped some of the rebel force. That suggests that diplomatic recognition of the NRLF provisional government may also have been prearranged, as it appears also to have been with one central American country.
More on Guy Philippe *here* and in the FReeppost *here.*
The same can be said for the District of Columbia, if only substitute the word *criminals* for *rebels*.
And then you have to come up with a means of differentiating the common armed robbers, drug addicts and burglary-inclined thugs from the political criminals and hucksters.
Oh, I don't think he intends to engage the Marines in armed conflict; he's neither so inclined nor so foolish, and he's U.S. trained. Think more along the lines of a Mahatma Ghandi-style passive demonstration, with the telvision cameras of the world watching on, nine months before a U.S. election. Mr Philippe planned his moves very well, and timed them like a tournament chessplayer.
This is a mess. I am withholding comment.
Before commenting, kindly read *this and *this.*
So, let us see if the pendulum can now swing the other way. And let's consider various ways in which the cooperative efforts of President Bush and a new President Philippe might benefit not only the Haitian people, but those of both countries.
There is no guarantee that Guy Philippe will ascend to head of state in Haiti, nor that he will be a beneficial or benign executive if he does; and there is no guarantee that he will survive this weekend, either.
But it's difficult to imagine how he might be more damaging to his nation and people than Aristide has been, and if the opportunity does come his way, I hope he'll make the best of it.
And I've pitched an interesting idea for an interview and report with Philippe to an editor pal. We'll see what he thinks of my clever interview idea, and maybe I can come up with an interesting question or two myself.
No guarantees ~ still, a different, more informed perspective than we're getting from much of the press, I think...and with some hope.
Hope your editor friend listens. (^:
