Abortion waiting period passes Ariz. House

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Legislation mandating a one-day waiting period for abortions has been approved by Arizona Legislature over the threat of a gubernatorial veto.

The Arizona House of Representatives gave its approval to the measure Thursday by a vote of 32 to 27.

The bill now goes to the desk of Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, who promised during the 2002 campaign she would veto any such measure. The bill passed the Arizona Senate last week by a vote of 18 to 11.

A Napolitano aide said the governor's position on the issue had not changed although he would not say for certain whether she would veto the measure when it reaches her desk Monday.

If she does, the measure likely dies because there are not enough votes in either chamber to override her veto.

One day?

Couldn't it have been more along the lines of, say, 75 years?

If it were a bill authorizing same-sex marriages, she would probably sign it the second it hit her desk.

Recently a friend showed me his wife's ultrasound. She is a few months pregnant. They have so upgraded equipment these days that the ultrasound looks almost like a snap shot of the child, features of the face are visible, you can count the fingers and toes, etc. Hopefully as these early ultrasounds become more common people will come to the realization that the fetus is a child and not a "mass of tissue" or whatever term is used to depersonalize the baby. It may ultimately help convince more people of the wrongness of abortion.

When I was pregnant with my third baby I had an ultrasound that looked very clear for one of the regular machines. I saw my baby smacking his lips and making faces. He reminded me of a baby picture of his dad. When he was born my mother-in-law said he reminded her so much of my husband.
