Immaculate Conception: Kids marry 'U' and 'Q' to learn letter combination
SPECIAL TO SOUTHWEST WEEKLY
MORRIS Nineteen Immaculate Conception School kindergartners marched down the aisle earlier this month in a wedding procession that "married" the letters, "Q" and "U."
The mock ceremony featured kindergartner Mikaela Marino as queen of the letter, "Q," and fellow student Nicholas McPherson as quarterback of the letter, "U."
Other kindergarten girls were queens in the court, proudly marching down the aisle before their queen and standing alongside Mikaela during the ceremony.
The boys were quarterbacks, in theme with the letters being acknowledged.
This is the fourth year for the wedding at the school. The tradition was begun by then new ICS kindergarten teacher, Maureen Keegan, as a fun way for her students to learn the "qu" sound. She came up with the idea for a wedding after seeing a cartoon in a newspaper about "Q" and "U" being inseparable.
"The letter, 'Q,' is never used without the 'U,' Keegan explained. Hence, the class married the two.
"It's the kookiness in me," Keegan said.
The ceremony started out small the first year and has grown each year. The ceremony also featured ushers and shushers, and Emma Dingbaum as the "quarter girl," instead of a flower girl. Emma strode before the queen with her basket of quarters, dropping one every row or two.
The queens were dressed in their finest velvet or lace or Sunday fancies, and the quarterbacks wore football jerseys.
"Minister" DesLauriers read aloud that the letter "Q" will have to be understanding when "U" needs to be with other letters.
"'Q,'" he said, "will always be there for "'U.'"
Other letters were asked to speak now or forever hold their peace.
Carol Robinson, 32-year ICS kindergarten teacher, also participated in the ceremony, topping off her dress with a fancy hat for the occasion.
The wedding party had a reception afterwards, with cake and sparkling grape juice.
Other kindergartners participating in the ceremony were Alicia Boers, Brooke Brummel, Danielle Chismarick, Peyton Christensen, Anne marie Enright, Lindsey Schmidt, Sarah Steed, Olivia Toler, Kaitlin Verchimak, Aurora Whitmarsh, Jacob Jurasits, Keagan Sobol, Matt Walker, Ryan Orr, Ryan Niewinski and Nick Bonomo. 02/27/04
P immediately spoke up, saying, "That $%^& slut Q has already slept with X, K, and L. She's got no business being with U and he knows it!" B jumped in to try and keep order, but was wrestled to the ground by P's friend W. Later, X remarked, "Frankly, I'm not sure if Q really knows what she's getting into. I mean, there have been rumors about U and A for a long while. And I hear he's even been with a couple of hot numbers, if you get my drift."
What about Qatar? I guess geopraphy wasn't her strong suit.
I'll fight to the death the government who tries to take all my earrings.
I am happy to hear any stories about teachers that are not full-on marxist indoctrinators:
I typed "eaRRings" but probably didn't make it obvious enough.
I'll try to do better next time, but the government had better keep their hands OFF my eaRRings.
More evidence that you should keep on homeschooling . . .
It sounded like a cute way for the kids to learn that U follows Q in English words.
Am I missing some hidden commie pinko gay agenda here or something?
Emma Dingbaum
Now there's a name....
One wonders if she'll hyphenate her name when she gets married.
Like .... Emma Dingbaum-Boone; or Emma Dingbaum-Bell; or maybe Emma Dingbaum-Schnurrenberger (bing bang boom...)
Ya beat me to it! ;)
