Early detractors of Mel Gibson's hit film, "The Passion of the Christ," are backing away from their critical remarks after the movie grossed a record-setting $26.6 million on its opening day.

"The Passion," which opened Wednesday on 4,643 screens at 3,006 theaters, set a record for the biggest opening day for a movie released outside the summer (May-August) and winter holiday months (November-December).

Mark Joseph, an entertainment executive in Los Angeles and author of the upcoming book "The Passion of Mel Gibson: The Story Behind the Most Controversial Film in Hollywood History," said the film industry is in shock. "This town is rocking," he said, "wondering what it all means. This is the film everyone deemed unreleasable."

Just goes to show that the Hollywood nit wits don't have a clue

Too rich, isn't it? Those tone-deaf Hollywierdos had no idea what was coming, yet any one of us here on FR could have told 'em a year ago what a huge hit Gibson had. Now the slugs want to get in on the trend and backtrack on the bile they spewed. I suspect this is the go-ahead for Kerry to say he just saw the movie and enjoyed it.

"Concerning the issue of anti-Semitism, the Jewish people are at no time blamed collectively for Jesus' death," said a review by Gerri Pare, David DiCerto and Anne Navarro. "Rather, Christ freely embraces his destiny."

Can't we just live in peace together?

Even Democratic front-runner John Kerry weighed in during a visit to Los Angeles yesterday, telling reporters that the movie could be anti-Semitic.

"I am concerned," Mr. Kerry, a Catholic, told reporters. "I don't know if it's there or not, but there's a lot of it around now. I think we have to be careful."

J-FK is concerned that his concern will be the wrong concern from concerned people who are not concerned - ping.

If not, [Hollywood] will leave itself open to charges of antireligious prejudice," he said. Many in the industry, he added, "are prostitutes, and they will go wherever the money is."

"Many in the industry"? Rabbi you are being too charitable -- try "most."

It means the greatest story ever told about Jesus Christ laying down his life for the Salvation of mankind is going main stream and there is no way anyone or anything can stop it.

It sure makes them look pretty stupid, doesn't it?

First we had the anti-Semite charge. That got no traction (and actually backfired, bigtime). Then we get the "most violent movie ever" talking point, ad naseum. It ain't working either. Now they don't know what to say or think.

I think it's hilarious!

Hollywood producers will blacklist Mr. Gibson

How ironic! Hollywood producers, once under attack by anti-Communists, now turn on their own.

Do we need to remind them how ugly that chapter was? They, who were once blacklisted, now turn around and blacklist one of their own? Shameful. Really really shameful.

They, of all people, should know better.

Typical Kerry. They SAY he "weighed in", but it sounds pretty worthless to me, except to say he doesn't know, but just to cover all the bases, give the pot a little stir.

If he's interested in confronting anti-semitism he can start to work on a very large segment of Islam.
