Bush seeks protection for gun dealers

President Bush urged the Senate to pass a bill that would protect gun dealers and manufacturers from frivolous lawsuits but without any amendments that would extend the assault-weapons ban or close gun-show loopholes.

"The administration urges the Senate to pass a clean bill, in order to ensure enactment of the legislation this year," the president said in a statement released late Tuesday. "Any amendment that would delay enactment of the bill beyond this year is unacceptable."

What loopholes? How is the law different at gun shows than it is elsewhere?

Bastards.

This has to be impossible. I have been told time and time again...regardless of Dubya's strong 2nd amendment stance as Gov of Texas...that it is just matter of time until Dubya bans guns altogether. Surprise! The far right fringe is full of crap.

Mr. Johnson's widow, Denise Johnson, filed a lawsuit against the gun dealer and manufacturer who sold the men the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle used to kill her husband.

My understanding is that the perp has admitted that the gun was stolen. So she's trying to sue someone for being a victim of a crime.

Another misleading bit of lobbying, disguised as strait reporting!

There is no such thing as the "gun-show loophole".

There is no such thing as an "unlicensed dealer" either.

The law is pretty strait-forward, anyone who buys and sell guns for the purpose of making a profit is a dealer, and is required to get a federal license.
Anyone dealing in guns for the purpose of making a profit, without a license, is guilty of a felony.

Collectors selling one gun to obtain a better one, widows, heirs, etc. who are disposing of items from their personal collection, estate, divorce settlement, etc. are not "engaged in the business".
They do not need a license, they are NOT dealers!

There are three kinds of people selling at gun shows.

1. Licensed dealers, who must perform the same back-round checks at gun show's that they do at their stores.

2. There are individuals selling their personal property, who are NOT required to do back-round checks. For them selling at a gun show is no different than posting an ad on the grocery store bulletin board or in a newspaper.

3. And there are a few felons waiting to be apprehended, but there are NO "unlicensed dealers"!

The "AW Ban" nonsense is even further removed from reality!

President bush has repeatedly come out in favor of extending the current 'assault weapons ban', banning the import of pre-ban, normal capacity magazines, and raising the minimum age for handgun ownership to 21.

And full of crap applies to those true statements how????

GWB has definitely said he supports extending the assault weapons ban another 10 years. The law expires in September. Be interesting to see what he does about it.

The far right fringe is full of crap.

More likely, we of the "far right fringe," who contacted our senators, and responded to the Bush Campaign's solicitations for donations (after our donations for 2000) with enevelopes stuffed with admonishons about the AWB being tied to our vote, probably CAUSED Bush to find his spine on gun rights.

The good results that can be achieved by activism are not evidence that it was unnecessary.

You're welcome.

How does Schumer conclude that merely wanting a clean liability bill is a flip-flop on the AWB?

Because Schumer is an ignorant pig. The AWB renewal is one promise Bush should break.

DRAFT NOT YET SUBMITTED, PLEASE COMMENT
To the Editor, Washington Times:

The February 26 article “Bush seeks protection for gun dealers” contains at least two serious errors. The article referred to “the gun-show loophole, which allows unlicensed dealers to sell guns without thorough background checks.” This is the deceptive rhetoric of the anti-gun lobby.

First, there is no such thing as an “unlicensed dealer.” There are licensed dealers, and there are private citizens. Federal authorities refuse to license private citizens as dealers unless they actually run a gun shop. Under Clinton, thousands of small “kitchen table” dealers had their licenses revoked simply for being too small, a move that ironically reduced the number of transfers subject to background checks.

Second, there is no gun-show “loophole.” A “loophole” means an exception, and there is no exception in Federal law for gun-shows. Current federal law treats sales by licensed dealers exactly the same whether or not they occur a gun-show. Federal law treats sales by private citizens exactly the same whether or not they occur at a gun show.

Even the article’s use of the term “assault weapon” deceptively suggests that these are automatic military rifles, when they are ordinary civilian rifles with certain cosmetic features. These superficial features are of no importance to criminals, as proven by a ten year ban that had no effect on crime, and which deserves to sunset.

Love,
Beelzebubba

CCRKBA ALERT!!!

DON'T BELIEVE THE 'SELL-OUT' RUMORS!
Rumors are circulating across the Internet that the National Rifle Association has "sold out" on passage of S. 659, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, by agreeing to amendments that would extend the so-called "assault weapons" ban of 1994 and close the so-called "gun show loophole."

Those rumors are false.

However, by circulating such allegations, it is possible that key members of Congress will be misled into believing that "It's okay if we accept these anti-gun amendments, because that's what the NRA wants."

Gun owners should realize that the NRA, along with the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and other gun rights organizations and our members and supporters, are solidly against any such extension. That has always been the case.

Firearms owners are urged to continue calling their Senators today as the Senate debates S.659, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. Tell your Senators to support passage of a clean bill, with no amendments.

To reach your Senators, call the Senate Switchboard at: 202-224-3121 and ask to speak to the Senators from your state.

It is also possible to get their direct telephone numbers by visiting the following website:

http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm.

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation's premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.

White House spokeswoman Clare Buchan said the president hasn't changed his position on any of the gun-related issues but doesn't want the lawsuit-protection bill to fail because of amendments.

IOW, he still will sign an AWB extension, wether it comes attached to this bill or some other.

The Senate? Jezzus. It is going to pass the Senate. why don't you contact the House. That is where it will live or die...and hopefully never reach Dubya, and never get signed...no matter how much stupid effort you expend or do not expend in the Senate. The House is where this bill lives and dies. Dubya has expended exactly ZERO effort to pass this bill. The House is likely to kill it...except for the fact that some people can't see reality and are wasting efforts in the Senate...Good God, are the "right fringe" stupid!!!

You're welcome.

With "FRiends" like the far right fringe....

It has to get to Dubya...That is what he has said all along.

Dubya said he would sign it if it reached his desk. Lincoln Chaffe said "We need the president's help to get the votes." Dubya has not fought for this bill and has actually stood in it's way.
