YCT Challenges Paul Green and Bill Green to Renounce Endorsements from Texas' Most Left-Wing Publication That Endorsed Al Gore, Tony Sanchez, Lloyd Doggett & Green Party Candidates
Endorsements Appeared in Same Issue as Prostitution Ads
The state's most left-wing alternative weekly publication, The Austin Chronicle, which runs advertisements for prostitution services, has endorsed liberal to moderate Republican judicial candidates Paul Green and Bill Green, along with liberal Democrat Congressmen Lloyd Doggett and Ciro Rodriguez.
Paul Green is challenging conservative Republican Texas Supreme Court Justice Steven Wayne Smith while Bill Green is running against conservative Republican Ernest Garcia for the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals.
In addition to endorsing Paul Green and Bill Green in its February 20 issue, The Austin Chronicle, which primarily endorses left-wing Democrats and Green Party candidates, also picked Dennis Kucinich as the Presidential candidate who is "best on the issues."
In the November 2002 general election, The Austin Chronicle endorsed no Republicans for statewide office, backing liberal Democrats Ron Kirk, Tony Sanchez, and Kirk Watson, and Green Party Texas Supreme Court candidate Brad Rockwell.
In 2000, The Austin Chronicle endorsed Al Gore for President (despite acknowledging that several members of their Editorial Board backed Ralph Nader) and radical Green Party candidate Douglas Sandage for U.S. Senate against Kay Bailey Hutchison.
In strongly endorsing Paul Green, The Austin Chronicle slammed incumbent conservative Republican Supreme Court Justice Steven Wayne Smith for his "unblinking (and fence-post uncomprehending) opposition to affirmative action."
In endorsing former Democrat Bill Green in the Republican primary for the 3rd Court of Appeals over conservative Republican Ernest Garcia, The Austin Chronicle fumed, "To suggest any sitting state Republican judge is worse than others is often a stretch Ernest Garcia may well earn that distinction." In addition to falsely referring to Bill Green as a "jurist" even though he has never been a judge and claiming he has "bipartisan" support even though he has identified no endorsement within the district, The Austin Chronicle failed to note that Bill Green has never represented a client or litigated a case while Ernest Garcia has extensive judicial and legal experience.
In another Republican primary race, The Austin Chronicle refused to endorse any candidate in the new Congressional District 10, declaring that all eight Republican candidates are "the poisoned bait of Bug Man Tom DeLay." This "no endorsement" decision suggests the Chronicle knows what to do when none of the Republican candidates match their liberal agenda, reinforcing the significance of their endorsements of Paul Green and Bill Green.
YCT State Chairman David Rushing stated, "The Dennis Kucinich-loving editors at The Austin Chronicle are invariably either supporters of the Green Party or on the far left of the Democrat Party. YCT is delighted that these committed liberals have given their seal of approval to the opponents of two conservative Republican judicial candidates whom YCT has endorsed. We applaud The Austin Chronicle for correctly identifying Dennis Kucinich, Lloyd Doggett, Ciro Rodriguez, Paul Green, and Bill Green as the candidates of choice for Austin liberals in the March primary."
Rushing explained, "They are leftists at The Austin Chronicle, but they are not stupid. Having endorsed Al Gore, Lloyd Doggett, Tony Sanchez, and Kirk Watson, The Austin Chronicle can always be counted on to identify the candidates conservative Republicans should avoid."
Rushing continued, "We call on Paul Green and Bill Green to renounce their endorsements from The Austin Chronicle. Not only is The Austin Chronicle an extreme left-wing publication, it publishes advertisements for prostitution services that appear in the very same issue in which Paul Green and Bill Green are endorsed. Prostitution is immoral and illegal. Paul Green and Bill Green have an obligation to renounce support that comes from such a corrupting, left-wing source."
Rushing also explained why The Austin Chronicle may have endorsed Paul Green and Bill Green, noting, "The left-wingers at The Austin Chronicle could have easily looked at the campaign finance reports showing that individual donors to liberal Democrats Ted Kennedy, Sheila Jackson Lee, Martin Frost, and Bill Clinton have all bankrolled Paul Green's campaign. The Austin Chronicle may also have noticed that Bill Green has voted in numerous, recent Democrat primaries."
In the Longview News-Journal last week, Paul Green claimed that Justice Smith's staff is too conservative. In today's San Antonio Express-News, Green criticized Justice Smith, saying "He's got some agendas related to social issues," apparently suggesting he disagrees with Justice Smith's opposition to racial quotas and abortion.
The last five to ten pages of each weekly issue of The Austin Chronicle consist of salacious soft-porn ads for female and male strip-clubs, including "The Boyz Cellar."
Among the numerous "adult services" classifieds in the February 20 Austin Chronicle issue in which Paul Green and Bill Green are endorsed are the following:

Apparently they didn't know Nader was going to run!
What is the evidence that Paul Green is liberal to moderate?
Any?
My impression is that he is a conservative.
It's a Republican primary with two candidates. There's no liberal to endorse.
Wrong! While in most races that would be true, the Bill Green that is running against Ernest Garcia has a history as a liberal democrat, working for a liberal Democrat legislator, on the judicial staff for Democratic judges, and voting for and supporting Democrats.
I cant find anything recognizably Republican or conservative about Bill Green. And that is why the left-wing rag the Austin Chronicle endorsed him!
Now the other guy, Paul Green is a Republican, sure, but IMHO is a 'squishy one', he's the O'Connor wing, while Smith is in the Scalia wing. My vote is for the conservative over the moderate. Again, there is enough of a difference for the leftist Chronicle to recognize the leftists' favorite choice.
Obviously there are some cases where liberal Republicans run. My comment was in response to the PAUL Green situation. While people are free to argue that Smith is more conservative, whatever, there's no evidence that I've heard to say that Paul Green isn't a conservative.
Frankly, I also suspect the linking of Paul Green with the manifestly objectionable Bill Green is designed to tar Paul by association. That is dishonest.
So according to hearsay, Paul Green is in favor of racial diversity among elected officials; I certainly wouldn't expect him to be opposed to it! And he supposedly supports "affirmative action" -- or opportunity -- in what form, who knows.
And so one individual part of his philosophy may or may not be questionable.
Besides, Smith has performed well as the incumbent. Why should we in effect 'fire' him?
Smith is a big fan of primaries. That's how he got the job. If he's confident that he's doing a good job, he shouldn't worry. After all, nobody's going to vote against HIM because his last name is the 'wrong' ethnic origin!
Opposing Smith is all about punishing the 'politically incorrect' who are against affirmative action. Dallas Monring News endorsed Green because of Smith's opposition to affirmative action.
Speaking of hearsay, this news report has Green spreading 'hearsay': In the Longview News-Journal last week, Paul Green claimed that Justice Smith's staff is too conservative. In today's San Antonio Express-News, Green criticized Justice Smith, saying "He's got some agendas related to social issues," apparently suggesting he disagrees with Justice Smith's opposition to racial quotas and abortion.
Another point: I knew both Smith and Rodriguez, and I knew Smith won the Hopwood case - I voted for the man who fought against the injustice of racial preferences and was more conservative. I was very insulted when the Austin Statesman insinuated that smith won on bias in 2002.
This primary I am voting for the best person in all slots - not just Smith for Texas Suprem court but also Ernest Garcia for 3rd court of appeals, Victor Carillo for Railroad commissioner, and Joe Martinez for Travis county sheriff. I dont believe in racial preferences in or out of politics and consider it a smear against Republicans to suggest that bias is a factor in primary outcomes.
