UPDATED: 2:31 pm EST February 25, 2004

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Police are investigating the death of a man found in the Hudson River wearing scuba gear.

The body was spotted floating Sunday by the crew of a cargo ship that had delivered coal to Dynergy's Danskammer power plant, the Times Herald-Record of Middletown reported. Newburgh town police were trying to establish the man's identity.

Newburgh is 80 miles south of Albany.

MAN FOUND DEAD IN HUDSON WEARING SCUBA GEAR.

Hmmm... I live about 5 miles from the plant on the east side of the Hudson River and I saw nothing in my local newspaper this morning. While scuba diving in the Hudson River is not unheard of, what makes this interesting is that the Hudson at that location is iced over right now, except for the shipping channels, which are kept open by Coast Guard ice cutters. Although a person could have been doing underwater repair work near the plant, one would think that LEO would have known about a missing diver and would have been searching for him.

Note that "Marcy South," which is a high voltage power line that carries electricity from hydro and nuclear plants in upstate New York along the Canadian border, runs under the Hudson River right near where this guy was found. The Catskill Aquaduct, which feeds the NYC water system also runs under the river near the power plant. On the other hand, because of the strong tides and currents, this guy could have started out 30 miles away or more in either direction -- like the Indian Point Nuke Plant, which is 20 miles south on the east side of the River.

Another diver story:

Police seek public's help to ID diver (Florida)

Posted February 26 2004

Hollywood police need help identifying a diver found floating Wednesday off John U. Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach.

A park ranger saw the body about 7:05 a.m. and pulled it ashore. The diver was dressed in a wet suit but had no diving tank or weight belt. There were no unattended boats or cars nearby. The current was strong, and police said the man appeared to have been dead for at least several hours, Hollywood police said.

An autopsy revealed the man may have died under suspicious circumstances, but police would not elaborate.

The man is described as a white male with reddish hair and a mustache. He was 5-foot-10 and weighed about 180 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hollywood police at 954-967-4357.

"Police are investigating the death of a man found in the Hudson River wearing scuba gear."

Hmm. My inital thought: Those Ukrainean pilots who died after delivering their mysterious "cargo"

Do people go scuba diving at this time of the year, in that location?
