Re. the paralyzed elk:

I was doing a bit of Google search and found that pesticides, specifically organophosphates, can cause paralysis.

"In some cases organophosphates can be stored in fat cells for prolonged periods. Neurotoxicity in this case can cause weakness, paralysis, paraesthesia of the extremities predominantly of the legs -- persisting for weeks to years."
