7 Russians Leave Guantanamo Bay
from The Moscow Times on Tuesday, March 02, 2004
The United States has turned over seven Russian citizens who were being held at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after being detained in Afghanistan, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.
The detainees were turned over Saturday under an agreement reached earlier by Washington and Moscow and were in custody of the Justice Ministry, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
An official with a regional prosecutor's office who asked not be identified said the seven men were being held in a pretrial detention center in Pyatigorsk in southern Russia.
He said the men have been accused of illegally crossing borders, mercenary activity and participating in a criminal group.
Prosecutors have said that the detainees include residents of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Chelyabinsk, western Siberia and the Caucasus region.
