February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding. The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

Huh, unemployment is less than it was during Reagan's term. Interest rates are down to a 40 year low, and like it or not outsourcing is good since it does reduce costs for companies to provide goods and services to consumers.

Heck if you had your way DVD players would cost $300 and a pair of shoes would be $100, due to the union costs, regulations, and the added cost of unbridled trial lawyers going to town.

Of course, you can't buy the cheap crap because you don't have a job. But hey, it's cheap!

I agree.
The stuff you need to live like Food, and a House are not lowered at all by this. They keep going up. So not having a good paying job is big deal. In the old days you could live quite well as long as you limited your toys.

A Jordanian man who killed his sister for being unmarried and nine months pregnant has been jailed for four months.

A local paper reported on Friday that a court ruled that the victim had shamed her family.

The Jordan Times said the man stabbed his 21-year-old sister at least 15 times in August 2003.

"The defendant lost his temper after seeing his pregnant sister and could not think rationally because of the unlawful act the victim had committed, which brought shame and disgrace to her family," the court ruled.

The unmarried victim went missing in September 2002 and later contacted her sister telling her she was pregnant. Her brother tracked her down and stabbed her, the paper said.

The court first charged him with murder, but changed that to a misdemeanour because of the damage it said she had done to the family's reputation and because it ruled the 26-year-old did not plot the killing. The family dropped charges against him.

Last September Jordan's parliament rejected an amendment to stiffen usually lenient sentences for people convicted of so-called "honour killings".

In a separate court case, a man was jailed for a year for killing his 17-year-old sister for allegedly having an affair.

The sister went missing in May 2003. She was arrested and returned to her family upon guarantees they would not harm her.

But during an argument with her brother, he pulled a gun and shot her twice, the court quoted the mother and the defendant as saying. That family also dropped charges.

Both verdicts are subject to appeals.

How the CIA conned the Soviet Union

The blast caused significant damage to the Soviet economy

The CIA exploited the Soviet Union's desire to pilfer western technology to send it flawed software that resulted in a huge explosion on a natural gas pipeline in 1982.

Nobody was killed in the blast, but it did significant damage to the Soviet economy, the Washington Post said on Friday quoting the memoirs of Thomas Reed, a former Air Force secretary who served in the National Security Council.

Approved by then US president Ronald Reagan, the plan was part of "cold-eyed economic warfare" against the Soviet Union that the Central Intelligence Agency conducted under Director William Casey, said Reed, whose book, "At the Abyss: An Insider's History of the Cold War," will be published next month.

Reed said the Soviets in 1970 had created a special KGB section to plumb western research and development for badly needed technology.

The secret programme was later disclosed by a Soviet engineer to French intelligence, who in turn alerted the Reagan administration in 1981.

Shocked by the knowledge the Soviets were stealing abundant western technology and aware the United States at the time was trying to block Western Europe from importing Soviet natural gas, the CIA came up with the idea of slipping the Soviets technology that would work for a while, then fail.
