According to Lewy, the VVAW had told its members not to cooperate with the government inquirya probe that was initiated by Sen. Mark Hatfield of Oregon in order to verify gruesome claims made at the VVAW-sponsored event. The historian also notes that government inspectors found veterans whose names had been used by people testifying in Detroit that were not actually there.
Unfortunately, though, the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) inquiry into the WSI atrocity claims has disappeared.
Great if we could name names of those witnesses who provably lied in the Winter Soldier Investigation, but I have yet to see those names, along with the text of their lies and how we prove the lies.
I've read that Al Hubbard, an executive officer in the VVAW, wrote the foreward to the WSI book, but I don't know if he counts as a witness.
Al Hubbard got debunked - he lied about his rank and apparently didn't go to Vietnam at all. I think if someone queried Kerry about Hubbard, he would readily admit he got fooled, while still upholding the truth of the WSI.
This may change (the appearance of solidity of the WSI) as interest in the topic increases. I see this issue, false atrocity claims, as very important as it challenges a central myth of the left.
More importantly, false atrocity claims make real atrocities easier to dismiss. A concern for all, regardless of party.
Three cheers for wintersoldier.com! It seems like a no-nonsense filter site on this WSI controversy.
Hopefully soon a loud and prominent controversy.
Lewy does not recall if he saw a copy of the naval investigative report or was briefed on its contents. "I'm quite confident the information is authentic," he said. Paul O'Donnell, a spokesman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, said officials were searching for a copy of the report.

Perhaps Kerry got to the NIS report first!
