House Explodes In South KC Police Search For Shooter
POSTED: 4:05 pm CST February 23, 2004 UPDATED: 5:13 pm CST February 23, 2004
KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
House Explodes In South KC
Two homes are burning at this hour in south Kansas City. One home burned to the ground, and the second home exploded.
The fires are burning on Grandview Road just north of Bannister Road. KMBC's Johnny Rowlands reported that a serious explosion may have been caused by a propane tank in one of the homes. The explosion sent debris flying into the air at least 1,000 feet, Rowlands said. Police said rubble landed five blocks away from the home.
Fire Battalion 107 was the first to arrive at the scene, and quickly came under fire from an unknown shooter, KMBC's Maria Antonia reported. The 12 firefighters called for help, and police and additional emergency crews were sent to the scnee. According to Chief Germane Friends, none of the firefighters were injured.

Police said there were shots fired from the woods near one of the homes. Officers were seen crouching behind vehicles with guns drawn. No emergency or fire workers appeared to approach the house despite intense flames, apparently because of the shooting.
A female paramedic was apparently injured before the explosion. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Her identity has not been released.
Police have cordoned off the area while they search for the shooter. Bannister Road was shut down at highway 71, which was causing backups in the area. Officers are patrolling the area on foot and in armored vehicles.
Officers evacuated people from several homes in the neighborhood by placing them in armored vehicles and driving residents from the scene.
Some parents who have students at Santa Fe Elementary school will need to pick their children up because of the situation, KMBC reported. Students who ride buses eight and 18 need to be picked up at the school, which is located at 8980 Old Santa Fe Road.

I saw it right afterwards...I betcha honeywell went into major lockdown mode...or at least increased security big time. It was unbelievable..
Did you hear the report on tv5..his neighbor was interviewed. She told him the city was trying to take his land over for new housing projects And that he might be having trouble with the IRS?

"One day I walked out to my car only to find a young black male beating a homeless guy with the Metro Bus sign because he evidently wouldn't stop asking him for change. :-)"
You've got to be kidding? I take it you work there...I can't believe the security just allowed it. Very disappointing. (and I know the security is inside high).

The going theory this morning at work is that as an unemployed old fart he would have had plenty of time to dig himself a spider hole on or nearby his property.
Or he went up with the house, but as a co-worker said, "If you blow up 300 pounds of meat your bound to find some of it!".

Thanks for the update!
I was just out to lunch and the police helicopter has moved it's search pattern to the west, right by the woods to the east of Blue River Road.
They found his pickup a half-mile away so prehaps he escaped the immediate area during the initial confusion.
I'll go peek again and see if the helicopter is in the same area.

No, not at all. When you wrote that they found his truck..at the time I was thinking if we was able to get his truck moved..maybe he survived and didn't.
On the other hand..maybe he expected to make a get-a-way with that truck...

Not a bad idea - park the truck a little bit away and then go through the woods to get to it. I'm guessing they haven't seen or heard anything since the second explosion.

There was no meth lab in either of the houses.
Donin was a survivalist, had lived there since his birth.
He was filling in low areas of his land to level it and turn it into an apple orchard.
The city was trying to stop him by fining him for illegal dumping (on his own land?) because he didn't have the proper permits.
The city had taken possession of one of the houses (so if there was a meth lab there, it belonged to the city), taken various vehicles, farm equipment, etc.
Donin had fought them legally, but was losing. He went 'over the edge' and decided to fight them the only way he knew how. He set the houses on fire, (the one he lived in had many firearms, kegs of gunpowder, etc. He reloads his own shells. He hunts on his own land all the time) and waited for the city services (Fire Dept, Ambulance Service) to show up and started destroying their equipment.
THE REAL REASON FOR ALL THIS ?????????
Donin's parents died, and the city thought Donin would sell out the property. This property ( a very large parcel of wooded land) is in between major housing, major business areas and to a developer would be a VERY VERY VALUABLE ASSET. They could turn a major profit even if they bought it from Donin.
Donin refused to sell. The city used it's legal branch to try and force Donin to sell.
Now, they will be able to get it for free. MORE CRIME and CORRUPTION in Kansas City, Missouri and profits for organized crime, which owns the KC police and government.
The information about the pursuit of the land by a developer with connections to organized crime and the Mayor's office, the KC government, the Kansas City Councilmen, the Kansas City Star(town newspaper) is being suppressed (as usual) but is well known by long time residents.
This land that Donin owns (or did until yesterday morning) is part of the expansion of the IRS building complex, and has other potential value. I am surprised they waited this long to go after Donin.
Anyway, evil has won again. Evil even has you believing this man had a meth lab. Just like those who believe Ted Nugent is a doper. You are being duped.
Don't ask me to name names. These are people I grew up with. Kansas City has a very sordid history. Brush Creek does have bodies buried in it's cement bottom. So do the foundations of the buildings downtown, built out of cement from the Mayor's brother-in-law's cement company. There are tunnels from Houses in Little Italy to downtown used by certain 'people' to escape. Stolen tractor trailer trucks are hidden in dolomite mines (gravel quarries). In KC the control of the city govt by Organized Crime is so obvious no one even notices anymore. As things expanded, HQ for Organized crime moved to Marshall, Mo. (ironic, eh?) Organized Crime owns and runs Branson, Mo. (Silver Dollar City, etc.)
This was a case of an innocent, caring, individual that got in the way of greed and corruption. Donin was the first to go to help a neighbor. They have made sure he can no longer be a source of good. Evil won again.

Donin shot out the tires, he had semi-auto weapons, many of them. Even has some automatic weapons. He has been collecting guns for a long time.

HE was having trouble with the IRS. In two ways.
The biggest was the fact that they wanted his land. His land butts up to the Kansas City IRS service center, and they want to expand.
This is a case of the govt,(US and City and State) forcing a landowner out, by harrassment. He didn't want to sell the land he and his parents lived on for over 60 years.

I don't mean to scare anyone away from KC.
It probably is no different than any other major city, in terms of corruption.
The Pendergast era for Kansas City, the Daley era for Chicago. (Son of Daley now runs Chicago, again.)
(Most people don't even know these two names.)
There are many beautiful things about Kansas City and the KC Area.
This particular case is probably being repeated over and over all over the country, as long-time landowners are being forced off their land with laws, so that someone else can reap a huge profit. It's just that usually the landowners don't end up fighting back in this particular manner.
Most of our Federal Government is, has been, and likely will be morally and legally corrupt, so, WHERE YA GONNA GO?
