May God bless them, and may they have plenty of ammo, in case they need it.

Just evac the embassy. Why the run around?

Hmmm, a reinforced platoon. That should do it.
Nice restraint on Bush's part; protect the Embassy, that's all.

I don't recall the Dominican Republic having the problems Haiti does - does Haiti really need to exist as a separate country, or can the DR just take over the whole island?

Can we label Haiti "Clinton's Quagmire" yet?
Nobody seems too upset that he left that place a hellish sh1thole.

You bots a bit touchy today? Its a legitimate question. If our embassy staff is in danger and the situation could deteroriate, why not get them out now? Sending in Marines might make their extraction harder.

Say it ain't so. With Iraq becoming a political liability in the '04 election, this is all we need. GEEEEEESH!!! What interest do we have in Haiti? What threat is it to our national security? I've been there. The people are crude and rude and anti-American thieves. It is a diabolical stench in the Caribbean.
This is NOT a smart move on W's part.
(I wonder in anyone in the Bush/Cheney Campaign reads freepers comments.)

Non-essential staff has left or is in the process of leaving. That leaves the essential staff--the ambassador, and some key staffers, plus a few guards. Those that are left may well be in the process of preparing the embassy for shutdown, but that takes time.

Uh, why aren't we just evacuating the embassy and taking our people out of harm's way?

If our embassy staff is in danger and the situation could deteroriate, why not get them out now?Better yet, why don't you read down the thread and get the facts about the situation and what it's going to take to get the job done before you go off halfcocked.

Why??? Because to close the embassy and leave would give the rebels a sign that the US has no interest and the bloodshed could continue.
