It wasn't posted as 'breaking news'.
Actually, there are an unlimited number of ignorant people out there who have no clue as to when the recession actually started. Otherwise they would not be blaming Bush.

Stock Market peaked in Mar 2000
Manufacturing employment began contracting in 1998, successively in spring 2000.
GDP actually went negative in 3Q 2000 (-.5%), in 1Q 2000, GDP grew only 1% (all this can be found at BEA.gov)
