Keep in mind that what you're hearing is not spontaneous testimony from a 27-year-old man - it is a well-produced classic of anti-American propaganda that involved more than John Kerry, though he did give the performance of his life.

It was ghostwritten by an experienced leftwing speechwriter, Adam Walinsky, and was likely well-rehearsed with Kerry by his handlers at the time. They knew what they wanted to get out of this performance, and they got it.

This should be studied in classes that analyze propaganda.

And more to the point - should someone who lent themselves to this, even years ago, be President? Yipes.

A good question for Kerry now would be does he still stand by the statements he made then. Yes or no.

Reference - Recipients of the Purple Heart. Many of us received injuries while in VietNam, (VietNam was two words when I was there, now it is one word), some of us received numerous injuries. We never reported those injuries for a number of reasons. (1) We were to busy surviving to take time out to run to the local hospital to get patched up. (2) We did not want to report non-debilitating injuries because we knew that other had much worse than we did. We were not going to detract from their injuries. (3) Pride. Simple Pride. If I can still walk, defend myself and not be a danger to others I am not going to cry for help.

Second Issue - After the Tet Offensive we had Hanoi on the ropes. Since working in the War Office (I won't give details for obvious reasons) I saw messages that indicated that the north was willing to give up Ho Chi Min if we would just stop the bombing. We did and they gave us (LBJ) excuses about why they couldn't make it to Paris for months after. Then we would start all over again. They contacted us (that I personally know of) at least 3 different times ready to hand over Ho. Each time LBJ would sit back and wait. Every one in the Military knew that what was need was LBJ to say - Bring Ho to Paris or Saigon however you can and when you sign a peace treaty we will THEN and ONLY THEN stop the bombing. Did we? Hell No! LBJ and the other LIBS always took the NVN (North Vietnamese) at their work. Why would the innocent NVN lie to us?

I split up the long clip of the Winter Soldier claims into several bite-size chunks:

• US soldiers playing artillery games (bombing buildings in friendly villages for beer).
• US soldiers slitting open prisoners to make their comrades talk (or maybe just for fun).
• US soldiers cutting off heads of Vietnamese & mounting them on stakes, stopping the practice only when the press showed up.
• How US soldiers decided who was VC & who was civilian.
• General attitude of US soldiers re: what was acceptable behavior & re: the Geneva convention.
