FORT STEWART, Ga., Feb. 20, 2004 Sometimes the biggest heroes are the quietest people, and Spc. Matthew Moss is that kind of hero.
The 22-year-old medic doesn't talk loudly about his experiences in Iraq, but when the soft-spoken Florida National Guard soldier tells his story, it's in a steady and matter-of-fact tone.
Moss downplays the role he played on a sunny November morning in Baghdad, when an improvised explosive device hit his convoy and he ignored his own wounds and tried to save the life of a fellow soldier.

SOLDIER HONORS (Nov. 18) -- A photo of Florida National Guard soldier Spc. Robert Wise is prominently displayed during a memorial service for him in Tallahassee at the McMillan Armory. More than 700 family, friends and military personnel attended the evening service to remember Wise, who was killed on Nov. 12 in Iraq. Wise's boots, helmet, dog tags and rifle were also symbolically displayed (left) during the service. Wise will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 24. I've found that this is the case almost all the time. Real heroes don't need to "Kerry on" about being a hero.
Hoo Rah! Spc. Matthew Moss
