Hmmmm..... not necessarily what our kids are learning isn't it? I wish that Casey, Wimbush and Armstrong would be able to get a national audience one day ... but I won't hold my breath.

"But historical data shows that Blacks served in the Confederate army, whether as cooks or combatants, enslaved people or freemen."

I thought you said it wasn't true.

Stan Armstrong has found truth in the SCV, said the 43-year-old Las Vegas filmmaker and college instructor. Armstrong, who is Black, joined a SCV camp in Memphis, Tenn., in 1997 after learning that a white relative served in the Confederate Army.

When people tell him he’s being used, Armstrong retorts, “Read your history.”

“The Civil War is not as Black and white as one may make it,” Armstrong said.

Getting past the revisionist history of 'it was all about slavery' is the first step.

If you count slaves, then yes blacks worked for the Confederacy. Of course, the Nazis used slave labor too, I would called those forced to work in labor camps Nazi soldiers. How many blacks were recognized by the Confederacy as official Confederate soldiers during the Civil War?

History is history, and it never serves a good purpose to brush anything under a rug.
The greatest part about this, is their rejection of political correctness. Sometimes people just want to learn more, it doesn't have to always be about taking sides.

At Little Round Top a black marksman kept a company at bay for hours until the Yankees outflanked him and killed him. Yup, he was black. 5% of the Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, C.S.A. Companies D and F were black and rode and fought under Forrest. Gee, history is so precise.

They fought against their leaders and their countrymen. The war is over come back to reality no one but a tad few will accept these ideals.

Well, that settles one of two issues...slavery could not have been bad or the Stockholm Syndrome predates the Stockholm bank robbery.

Actually, many of the FREE Blacks, including BLACK SLAVE-OWNERS fought, in NON-segregated units, unlike the ALL-black/white-officered Northern units.

Depends on whether you read history, or believe History.

I know that there was a Free Colored Division in New Orleans that fought for the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War-- of course, when the Union captured the city in 1862 they promptly switched over to the Union. That sounds like they fought out of fear rather than a love of the Confederacy.

What will the cultural deconstructionists do when they find out that Americans have discovered that our history is one part of the cultural glue that holds us altogether? My guess is there going to throw a conniption fit about it.

“It’s always been a part of my life,” said Winbush, a 74-year-old retired school administrator living in Kissimmee, Fla. “You got all these politically correct folks sweeping it under the rug like it didn’t happen.”

History is supposed to be an accurate record of what happened, first and foremost. It can also be other things, a celebration, a regret, but always in accord with the truth of what happened.

Those who would re-write history to suit their personal agenda are beneath contempt.

And your evidence is? I guess the logic is that if the CSA didn't have segregated units, they must have integrated black troops in with whites. But what factual support do you have? A few wealthy freed blacks contributed to Confederate war loans. Mulattoes in New Orleans trained in their own units but weren't mustered into service by the Confederacy, though they later were by the Union forces. Had free African-Americans been soldiers in integrated units, wouldn't we have heard more about it?

If a personal servant, or barber, or teamster, or slave laborer picked up a gun at one point, did that make him a combatant in a "NON-segregated unit?" Curiously, at the very end of the war, it was reported that African-Americans were being drilled -- but as part of all-Black detachments -- an indication that there was something wrong with the claim that the Confederacy was somehow more integrationist than the rest of the country.
