Then he needs to address the difference in living standards - by today's standards, we were all living below the poverty level yet we thought we were living well. Now poverty is defined as not having enough stuff like microwaves, VCRs, DVDs, TVs, stereos, foreign cars, etc.

I have to go dry my eyes and blow my nose now. Thanks a lot. Too funny. I am 3/4 Irish and 1/4 Cherokee. I drink too much, lie all the time, and keep losing my land to white people.
I work 58 hours a day at the mill. I get killed every night by the mill owner then my pay is docked for working too slow. When I go home my dad is too drunk to bury me.

"Today it seems both parents have to work full time, and even then lots of families barely scrape by. "
Solution: Do Not Have Children Until You Can Assume The Cost For All Their Needs.
I get fed up with the guys who go around bragging what great men they are. "Hung like Einstein and almost as smart as a horse" is what needs to be tattooted on their fore heads.

Illegals may well drive down the cost of housecleaning, gardening, handyman projects, and babysitting to the everyday homeowner who sees their best interest as saving money and letting someone else do work they don't have time for but want done. Until john q public wakes up and realizes they are also an employer and breaking the laws of the land, this problem will continue. These people won't benefit from increased minimum wage laws, they aren't covered in the first place.

Monty Phython was the only funny thing ever on PBS in the early 70's.

"One big oversite in this article, taxes in general and in particular on the poor have gone way up since Mr. Behnke was a kid."
You neglected to say that the reason for taxes increasing are the continuous supply of people who need assistance.
Close the borders and eject the illegals, Mr President!

Now at a time of abundant cheap labor and a 6 percent unemployment rate on its way to 7.9 percentAnd the referee throws a "Bravo Sierra" flag on that play...

"if the poor are getting poorer, then why did the government have to RAISE the poverty level to show more poor people? "
Simple asnswer is inflation. When gas, food and rent goes up you sink lower into the basket of poverty unless your wages rise to stay even or above the scale.

"We were a classic nuclear family until my brother underwent decay and we fissioned."
You certainly were poor if you didn't even have enough water to keep your brother submersed in cool clear waters of safety.

Gald I read back through and someone gets it. It is the small to large employer to blame. I can't fault anyone who wants to come to America, but legally is the right way. If the illegals couldn't get work, most wouldn't come here.

One big oversite in this article, taxes in general and in particular on the poor have gone way up since Mr. Behnke was a kid. Was the Earned Income Credit available when Behnke was a kid?
How about Section 8 Housing, Medicaid, Food Stamps, WIC, School Lunch program, SSI, etc., etc. - all part of the over $400 billion in federal and state giveaways to"Persons with Limited Incomes"?
Persons with limited incomes are the poor.

Talk aboput poor...
"We were so poor that all six children and my Ma and Pa lived in a 55 gallon drum, even now when I see a group of 55 gallon drums sitting together--I think of a mobile park."
"We were so poor, we wouldn't have noticed one way or the other," he said. "We managed to eat because we had good dogs that would run rabbits by you so you could kill them with a stick or rock. We couldn't afford to buy shells for a gun."
We were so poor that all we ever had for lunch was chicken feet sandwiches without bread.
We were so poor, all of my dreams were in black & white.
We were so poor that we'd sit on the front porch and crack our knuckles so the neighbors would think that we could afford walnuts.

We were so poor we couldn't afford dreams. Or drums to live in. We slept in a culvert that was always flooded. I used to get spanked for wetting my mud in my sleep. But at least we had mud and each other. And we were happy.
Dreams were for the rich folks up the road who had drums and knuckles to crack. We didn't envy you because we knew that with success came pressure and pressure caused sadness. Above all we wanted to be happy.
I miss those days.

Ahha, you were one of those scruffy little Duster weren't you. You were the ones that made me sneeze in church, making everyone close by slap me saying, "Boy, you'd better be quiet before I put a lid on your drum."
