Best Unbiased Weekly News Magazine
Ruiner
Posted on 02/18/2004 9:56:25 AM PST by ruiner
Can anyone recommend a good weekly current events publication. I'm looking for something along the lines of Time, but preferable a little less biased.
Sorry for the vanity and thanks in advance for any responses.

Try Insight.

Insight is very good. The Week is also good - it's a compilation of many different magazines and gives a pretty broad spectrum of opinions.

Hmm... You are asking for a general news magazine without bias. That would require the wisdom of Diogenes.
About the best I can do is recommend a magazine that at least attempts to control it's inherent biases. US News And World Report.

Insight slants conservative (not that there's anything wrong with that). I subscribe to U.S. News and World Report. Their reporting is more center/center-left in comparison to Time/Newsweek, etc. They carry Michael Barone and John Leo's columns who are conservative. Mort Zuckimer, the editor, writes the back space column and is consistently pro-war though more liberal on some social and tax issues.

HUSTLER is a favorite newsmagazine of Joe Lockhart and Bill Clinton.

I would second The Economist. Their coverage of everything seems pretty fair and even-handed without an agenda driven bias. It also has a very good scope of coverage, reporting on issues from every little corner of the world and topics ranging from politics, military, diplomacy, business, arts, leisure, and just about everything else.

It's not a magazine, but personally, I get all my news from that little window that pops up when I log on to AOL Instant Message.
Be warned though, I've wiled away many an afternoon with the "rate a buddy" feature. That thing is addicting!

I second that, you can't beat The Economist for a weekly news mag.
It's British, and expensive, but you will feel as I did (when I used to be younger and richer and a subscriber) that the entire world is in your mailbox, promptly every week.
I guess they have a bit of a liberal slant, but they more than make up for it in the comprehensive quality of their coverage, and the snarky brit humor of their photo captions.
Read The Economist and you'll probably be the best informed person you know. "News" will be old news to you!

Aw, c'mon. That's not the best unbiased, general weekly news magazine. ONLY Weekly World News can possibly fit that awesome RFQ.

I'd count the Economist as being pretty middle of the road - it's economically conservative and supports the war in Iraq with caevats.
It's well written and entertaining. The main disadvantage is that it's pretty free of photographs and fluff, so if you like those things, it's not for you.
I'd recommend picking up an issue and seeing what you think.
The biggest problem is the $110 a year subscription price. You can buy gift subscriptions at the end of the year for $99, so that's the best time to get it. And a mistake on their part; I probably would be a subscriber today if they'd made the $99 year round. There's just something that makes me resist that extra $10 ...
