Boston owner: Rodriguez deal shows system 'woefully out of whack'

Wednesday, February 18, 2004 Red Sox owner John Henry now believes a salary cap could be good for baseball after watching the rival Yankees trade for Alex Rodriguez -- a deal his own franchise could not complete.

The Bravos have really been decimated this offseason...Maddux, Sheffield, Lopez, etc. all gone. Can J.D. Drew pick up the slack?

Bottom line is, you can spend all the money you want, but if your team doesn't produce on the field, your team is screwed.

Man, I wish Steinbrenner could've gotten Curt Schilling as well just to rub it in.

And I bet A-Fraud doesn't even bat .300 with runners in scoring position (the only offensive stat in baseball that really matters).

Just watch. The Braves have the best front office in baseball.

It's 162 game regular season.( Admittedly our post season record sucks)

Now if only the Cubs can get a manager that won't leave them in too long.

Being an Angels' fan, I'm sure glad that Dusty Baker took Russ Ortiz out of Game 6 of the 2002 World Series in the 7th inning and a 5-0 lead!

You and others a vastly underating the pitching that the Yankees have assembled this year. It's actually an improvement over last year. Here's what they can throw at you:

Kevin Brown
Mike Mussina
Javier Vazquez
Jon Leiber

They've also added a few very good setup men (Quantrill and Gordon) who can fill in as closers if Rivera falters. Gordon still strikes out people like crazy, even if he's a little risky with men on base. Quantrill is a very nice pitcher.

The games are yet to be played, but I see the Yankees doing very well this year, forcing Boston to sweat out the Wild card spot and play all their post-season series on the road. It'll break my wife's heart, but the Yankees look to be reloaded.

Baseball is boring as it is....

Salary cap works for America's favorite sport - FOOTBALL.

You know, I was watching a replay of the Super Bowl on Eurosport in a local pub a while back. The bartender looked at the screen and said 'most boring game ever invented right after snooker'. I had a chuckle over that.

Compared to Rugby, Football is kinda boring with its stopping for at least 30 seconds between each play.

And again, the Angels and Marlins are examples of relatively low cost, high performing teams. If MLB did go to a salary cap and/or revenue sharing, then you can bet that mediocracy would rule, where at the end of 162 games most of the teams would play .500 ball and finish within a few games of first place, thereby prompting the owners to increase the number of playoff spots to all but the last place team in each division, which would lower the quality of play even further (although the owners would call that "equalization").

Red Sox continue to whine. I hope the Yanks will go after Garciaparra once his contract's up next year-to play second base alongside Jeter and A. Rod.

eight wins? Aw, c'mon. Maddux didn't leave, like Tommy. The Bravos kicked him to the curb. The guy is still a class act and a well above-average pitcher. And, on those (more rare now) occasions when he is on, can still burn through an opposing lineup on fewer pitches than just about anyone in the game.

The Yanks were able to get A-Rod, when the Sox couldn't, because the Rangers were willing to pay more of A-Rod's contract for the Yanks. Why? Because the player they were getting from the Yanks (Soriano) had a much cheaper contract than the player they were getting from the Sox (Ramirez). It's that simple.

Actually, the issue was that A-Rod would have been accepting a pay cut to go to the Red Sox & the player's union wouldn't allow it.

That's why A-Rod is in a Yanks uniform & not a BoSox one.

If Boston doesn't sign Garciaparra to a long term contract, expect that Steinbrenner to stick it to Boston and pick up Nomar for 2B. FWIW, if Boone can come back this year, the Yankees will have all-stars at all 9 positions.

Where's Boone going to play if he comes back? A-Rod just took his job.
