Can't give advice on where to stay but a couple of "must see" places is the Smithsonian and the U.S. Mint (there's something awe-inspiring seeing bales of money).

I think you are talking about the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (paper money). The US Mint strikes coins and is not in DC.
