WASHINGTON – As the White House struggles to document President Bush's attendance during a National Guard stint in Alabama, conspiracy theories about his military record have gained currency on the Internet. Some are pretty wild – and flat-out false, insist Guardsmen who served with Bush.

One website that's growing in popularity, www.awolbush.com, alleges Bush not only shirked his duties at the Alabama base but also his home base in Texas, where it says he sought safe refuge from the Vietnam war in a so-called champagne unit for sons of the political elite. One article it links to suggests widely published photos of Lt. George W. Bush in the cockpit of his F-102 Delta Dagger were staged, and that he never actually flew the supersonic jet fighter.

Another piece rumors that he did fly, only to crash one day after drinking, which is the real reason the Guard grounded him; while yet another speculates he was suspended from flying after skipping a required annual physical to avoid a drug test.

Is any of it true? Not a word, say former Texas Air National Guard pilots who flew formation with Bush during training missions and flight crew who strapped him into his cockpit before flights.

"It's a load of [equine excrement]," said one.

Still, most were at a loss to explain gaps in Bush's pay record while in Alabama, where he transferred to a non-flying unit for about six months in 1972 to work on the political campaign of a family friend. One offered that Guardsmen who performed "equivalent duty" outside their primary base typically weren't paid for those drills, but still earned points or credits toward retirement.

Putting other rumors to rest was easier for the former airmen, though all confess to being staunch Republican friends and supporters of Bush.

I am sick to death of this story.

Talk about beating a dead horse...

Brace yourself, explosive questions continue to be raised, such as, 'Did Bush have his tonsils removed at age 5? Where are these tonsils now?'

Fossil Footprints Prove Bush Served in Alabama
(2004-02-13) -- Archaeologists working on a dig near Dannelly Air National Guard Base have uncovered a fossilized set of footprints which reportedly support President George W. Bush's contention that he served his Guard duty in Alabama more than three decades ago.

Radiocarbon dating and analysis of the geological stratum in which the fossils were found establish that the prints were made during the Vietnam era.

"The angle and depth of the boot impressions match the gait and known weight of the young Mr. Bush at that time," said an unnamed archaeologist. "It was quite exciting at the dig site -- like finding the proverbial missing link."

Together with previously discovered dental records and ancient documents, this latest evidence helps complete a picture that confirms what the President has said all along.

Forensic specialists will now comb the sedimentary layers where the footprints were unearthed hoping to recover bits of fossilized hair, saliva or sloughed-off skin cells to subject to DNA analysis which would finally prove his Guard service conclusively.

I truly believe if Clinton or Kerry had been a fighter pilot, it would be touted as being the most important thing imaginable in picking a president.

In a way this story is good for the economy. Paper mills have to be running three shifts a day just to keep up with the print-media demands.

The downside for the greenies is that at least an entire forest has been felled in the process.

I was in the guard during that timeframe. The F102s were very dangerous and our unit had several close calls and one fatality. Wouldn't have wanted to fly one.

One related question for John Kerry: will you release the citations for your 3PH, Bronze Star, and Silver Star--earned in 4 months? It would also be nice if some enterprising "news" organization would interview members of his boat crew as well as superior officers. He has put this front and center. What's the big deal about getting some details and witness accounts?

Have they charged GW with being AWOL as a General yet ?

Wouldn't surprise me to hear them say he never showed up for being president either. And all the newsreel footage in the world would not change the story as long as one senile old man in butte montana said he had no recollection of him ever being in the whitehouse.......
