" I believe the Greens already agreed not to field a candidate in an attempt to avoid what happened in 2000."

My understanding is that the Greens will run someone for President, but will only campaign (or perhaps may only seek to be on the ballot) in states that are safely Democrat or safely Republican so as to not be "spoilers for Bush." But local Green Party members from competitive states are pissed off at that, since in many states future ballot access is determined by the number of presidential votes the party gets. If Nader runs as an independent, some enviroterrorist runs as a Green and maybe Kucinich runs on the Natural Law Party label, that might take 5% from Kerry, which will be helpful in battleground states.

"In fact, this is one of the key shortcomings of nominating Kerry -- he is a sitting duck in September in the Senate -- we are going to make him vote on making the tax cuts permanent, on judges, on defense appropriations, on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, etc. Senate procedure will be used to destroy him. Either way he votes, he loses... either he enrages his base or alienates the middle of the American electorate."

And Kerry can't resign from his Senate seat like Bob Dole did, even if he's delusional enough to believe he'll beat Bush, because GOP Governor Mitt Romney would name his replacement.

His mother is Mexican and his father Anglo. You're right, a guy from New Mexico called Bill Richardson would normally not be very helpful motivating Hispanics to vote Democrat, but Richardson spent many of his formative years in Mexico and speaks fluent Spanish, so he's got "Hispanic cred."

Even though it was false, it looks like L'Affair Kerry made a major dent in his numbers. "Drudge Report" is currently the #3 most-search item on Yahoo. The Jane Fonda pix also must have made an impact...we have to renew the heavy pressure on that front.

Missed 80% of the votes......WOW
Add that to the fact that the answer to my tagline is zero and it sure doesn't look like he's been doing his job!

Mass should FIRE HIM!

"How about a Hillary/Ford ticket in 2008?"

Ford would only be 34 on inauguration day, so he can't be VP yet. But if he were old enough he would be an excellent choice, since (i) he could motivate blacks to turn out (blacks may vote 90% Democrat, but if they hadn't turned out in large numbers in 2000 Gore wouldn't have won Wisconsin or perhaps even Pennsylvania, Michigan or Oregon or made Florida, Ohio, Missouri, Arkansas or Tennessee so close), (ii) he is extremely good looking and well spoken, and would help with the female vote and (iii) he is from Tennessee and is not very liberal by Democrat standards, so he could perhaps put Tennessee, Arkansas and Virginia in play. I hope he runs for the Senate and loses in 2006, or else he could be a tough VP or maybe even presidential candidate in 2008.

I just noticed you all were talking about 2008, so my comment about Ford's age was stupid. My bad.

Harold Ford? Why do the Dems need an african american on the ticket, they already have 96% of that vote. Hispanics and independent women are where the action is.

The Dems need to reward the black constituency, which has been taken for granted. They also want to increase black turnout, which can mean victory in the big electoral states. Hillary takes care of the independent women's vote.<./p>

The Hispanic vote is important, but the Dems still garner most of that vote. Interestingly, 32% of the Hispanic population lives in the South. In 2000, Hispanics made up only 7% of the turnout compared to 10% for blacks. Gore received 90% of the black vote in 2000 compared to Clinton's 84% in 1996. Bush got 31% of the Hispanic vote compared to Dole's 21%. A case could be made for Richardson, but it has to be weighed against alienating the black vote, which has been more loyal and waiting in line longer than the Hispanic constituency.

""Drudge also had Erskine Bowels beating Elizabeth Dole.""

Don't forget Allard losing by 10%.

Or a close run for Dean in New Hampshire.

Trust me when I tell you, Edwards will be harder to beat then Kerry. The Bush machine is lying in wait for Kerry. They will slaughter him. Mr Edwards could be another (Southern governor) buba.

That's quite a photo of Kerry's choppers.......

There is a big Dem'rat galoot
Who has a strange middle front tooth
Every time he goes smiley
He looks quite reptile-y
Keep him out of your club's kissin' booth.

Edwards may be smoothe and a practiced trial attorney, but he is an empty suit when it comes to the issues of the country.

The media has been talking about Edwards non-stop. They are in love with him as they were John MCCain in last election! He has so many people fooled into thinking he is genuine. He is Bill Clinton all over again with the "I feel your pain" phoniness!

The media is in love with Edwards for two reasons (1) They want a horse race because it helps ratings and pushes their own liberal agenda, and (2) they are nervous about Kerry's vulnerabilities, i.e., his womanizing (which they know more about than they are reporting) and his anti-war activities (Jane Fonda).

Wow, I have to pipe up here and say I'm shocked at your report. I grew up in Michigan and went to HS in Wisconsin and never had a bias against southerners nor heard of such a thing.

Must have been peculiar to the university environment you describe because regular Midwesterners are not obsessed such things.

There were rumors floating around last week that Dean was thinking about going Green. Haven't heard any more on that.

Baseless rumors, I'm afraid.

Howard Dean has always said he'll support whoever the *dem* nominee is, and at the debate Sunday night he specifically said if Kerry wins that spot he'll get behind him.
