Kerry left his ship early to go train in CA on Swift boats (thinking AS he admitted himself!) they were safe off-shore duty, then he left combat after only 90 days (after using a non-written, technical excuse to leave after writing himself up for 3 minor wounds (as he himself admitted), and then he left active duty from his admiral's aide job when that duty in Boston got inconvenient.
Kerry is a patriot - but perhaps only in your words and in his mind.
In my mind, he is an international socialist who hates the American ideals that real veterans served and died for.

Gridley roster shows this for Kerry
Kerry, John United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 202-224-2742 john_kerry @kerry.senate.gov 67? - 68 LTJG
Kerry could help with that date (67) they've got a question mark next to.

Transcript of JohnKerry.com Chat With Douglas Brinkley, Author of "Tour of Duty - John Kerry and the Vietnam War" JK first served on the USS Gridley, from Jan 1968 to June 68...
Thats not quite right- he was assigned to the Gridley from June 1967 to June 1968...
the Gridley was not an aircraft carrier- it was a missile guided frigate. Kerry spent Jan 1968 to June 68 in the Pacific Ocean and along coast of Vietnam on the Gridley ...
It was while in Da Nang, that JK saw his first shiny swift boat ...
These were 50 ft long boats built in Louisiana...aluminum
He decided to join Swift school in Coronado, CA. This way, he'd be his own commanding officer, and not have to listen to captains barking at him to keep their ship perfectly polished

What ... on CNN? On the ground. Come to think of it, 13 years ago today we were getting ready for the invasion.
To: syriacus
I'll be glad to hold that against him, as long as Kerry lumps Guard duty together with draft dodging. You do have a good point there. He opened the can of worms, not us.

So Kerry beached one of these boats that was always bottoming out in shallow water? That must have taken some effort. Kerry might have even applied for another Purple Heart after the butt chewing he undoubetedly received from his CO after beaching his boat.

Speaking of beaching the boat...I thought I read a year or so ago that Kerry came ashore twice in the same area. He did it one of those times, so that a cameraman could catch it on film.
I admit, I might be mistaken, but this is how I remember it....
Kerry made sure to have filmed documentation of his being a hero, like Kennedy.
I can't find a reference to that article (Which was similar to the Boston Post article in that it discussed Kerry's checkered background).
Does anyone know where that article is?

But I don't remember reading that he beached his boat twice

From http://www.boston.com/globe/nation/packages/kerry/061603.shtml
When Kerry returned to his base, his commanding officer, George Elliott, raised an issue with Kerry: the fine line between whether the action merited a medal or a court-martial.

Thanks for the information!!
I think he waded ashore to find the best way to set everything up for filming. I think the boat remained near the shoreline.

Thanks, againg.
I did a search at the Globe archives and found this... which might be the particular Globe article I remember [capital letters courtesy of the Globe]
THE MAKING OF THE CANDIDATES JOHN FORBES KERRY OFTEN TAGGED AS A POLITICAL OPPORTUNIST -- ALOOF, INSINCERE -- HE IS ALSO A MAN OF COURAGE AND CHARISMA, HIS INNER LIFE INTENSE, EMOTIONAL AND FILLED WITH THE RAW EXPERIENCE THAT SHOWS IN THE SEVERE LINES OF HIS FACE, THE OFTEN-HAUNTED LOOK IN HIS EYES. Published on October 6, 1996

Vietnam. The Mekong Delta. February 1969.
US Navy boats glide through rays of sunlight glinting off cobalt waters. Lush green palms and mangroves sway on river banks, and just under them dozens of Viet Cong snipers are dug in deep. John Forbes Kerry, then a 25-year-old skipper of the six-man crew on Patrol Craft Fast 93, is about to be ambushed.
The rattling of machine-gun fire jumps in loud bursts. Volleys of B-40 rockets splash just a few yards away. Then Kerry orders the boat

You do have a good point there. He opened the can of worms, not usYou are right....and here is another example of the Kerry campaign's attempts to paint Bush as someone who did something wrong....
From the John Kerry for President website
One sharp distinction between Kerry and Bush is the way they chose to deal with military service during the Vietnam War. Bush would decide to avoid active service by allowing his father to pull strings to get him into the National Guard in Texas, while Kerry volunteered for the Navy and asked to be sent to Vietnam
Kerry is "in error" when he says his campaign is not actively promoting the issue of Bush serving in the Guard. (I am putting it kindly when I say this is a Kerry-"error.")
