TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- A 1,000-ton construction crane piecing together a new interstate bridge collapsed and narrowly missed toppling onto a busy highway below. Three workers were killed and five were injured.

The steel structure landed between the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 280, which splits inside the construction zone. The tip of the crane came to rest just on the edge of the highway.

My family and I just drove through there yesterday morning! This stretch of highway has been under construction for 10 years, it seems.

I know it's been under construction since at least 1997, when I drove through en route to Michigan State.

I knock Michigan roads a lot, but at least they had an incentive program to get the construction done early.
