TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- A 1,000-ton construction crane piecing together a new interstate bridge collapsed and narrowly missed toppling onto a busy highway below. Three workers were killed and five were injured.
The steel structure landed between the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 280, which splits inside the construction zone. The tip of the crane came to rest just on the edge of the highway.

The crane, which streches above bridge supports and lifts concrete sections of the roadway into place, was moving at the time it collapsed, but it was not hoisting any materials, said Joe Rutherford, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Transportation.
