Well, well. Even the pro-Communist, pro-Saddam, anti-Blair Guardian is reporting this story. I wonder when Pinch Sulzberger will see the light? For the past ten years or so the American "mainstream" press has probably been the absolute worst in the whole free world.

Secret commissions paid to pro-Saddam middlemen by western oil firms found their way into George Galloway's anti-sanctions drives.Bookmarked for later reading. Added keyword Galloway.

This whole thing is a great lesson in why the Liberals are wrong about providing "humanitarian aid" to evil regimes. There is no such animal; any sleazebag who is capable of causing his regime to NEED humanitarian aid is fully capable of turning it into regime aid.
It is just another form of enabling. Every dime, blanket or bushel of grain distributed to 'the people' is one less that the regime has to provide for them, and hence one more availble to regime uses.
Again, There ain't no such thing as humanitarian aid.
That does NOT include DISASTER RELIEF as that is an entirely different thing.

It looks like this story is going to come more to the surface again. There is apparently an AFP report that the results of the investigation in Iraq will be coming out soon:
"Results of Saddams oil bribe probe to be made public"
BAGHDAD: Iraqi Oil Minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Ulum said on Monday he would soon make public the results of his investigation into the alleged oil bribes handed out to foreign political figures by former leader Saddam Hussein.
"I will soon present a detailed report including all the elements I have gathered so that everybody knows the truth in this affair," the minister told AFP.
The Iraqi newspaper Al-Mada published on January 25 a list of 200 political figures from 40 different countries who received coupons worth millions of barrels of crude oil that they could sell on the market.
The ministrys undersecretary, Abdul Saheb Salman Qotob, had told AFP that at least two prime ministers and two foreign ministers were on the list, as well as journalists and relatives of heads of state.
"We started collecting all information and documents on this issue back in November in order to present them to the Coalition Provisional Authority," Ulum said.
"It should be known by all that the former regime used oil revenue to achieve its own goals. There are many parties with no connections whatsoever to the oil sector who benefited from these coupons and made a lot of money," he added.

Another Guardian Report has these interesting statements:
"Our investigations in Iraq, New York, Paris, Moscow and London indicate the new British-related documents are authentic, although their meaning is not always clear."
and . . .
"The so-called oil list has already caused worldwide embarrassment, with allegations made against prominent people and companies in France, Russia, Switzerland and South Africa, as well as employees at the UN.
Across the world, some of those named agree the lists seem authentic. Others deny it, or say details are exaggerated."
