The German firm Siemens will move most of the 15,000 software programming jobs from its offices in the United States and Western Europe to India, China and Eastern Europe, a company official said Monday.
"Siemens has recognized that a huge amount of software development activity needs to be moved from high-cost countries to low-cost countries," said Anil R. Laud, managing director of Siemens Information Systems, the group's information technology subsidiary in India.

Go back and be trained on Political Science so you can loaf in the Fed. Govt' for a lifetime. Oops, can't do that: Most of the jobs there (although supported by the taxpayer) are open only to those in the Gov't Club already.
Ther's one silver lining - the welfare state called the Federal workforce cannot sustain its numbers with the decreaing tax base necc. to support it. Sooner or later headcount has to go. Whereelse are they going to find the savings?

I haven't had a "real" job since I was 18 (now 40), but somehow, with a little initiative, I hope to start a "real" job in 4 years....
I believe a lot of people are making a mountain out of mole-hill with this worry....

You haven't got a clue. Teachers at the primary and secondary level require certification. That means going back to school to get an education degree and do student teaching. You're going to tell a Ph.D.-type with 8-10 years of university education already, maybe 10-20 years experience, in his/her late forties or early fifties, maybe with kids in school and a mortgage to pay, to chuck that and go back to school?!
Teaching at a university is incredibly competitive. A few years ago my former department (physics) posted a tenure-track position. No research, just teaching. A 9-month appointment. Tenure possible after 5-7 years. There were about 350 applicants. Top-notch people, many were foreign nationals. You just don't have academic positions drop in your lap. You might spend a lifetime looking for one and never find it.

"...There ain't gonna be one programming or software job left in America or Europe soon. Of course, computers are a "Buggy Whip" industry. We're way better off without anyone who understands computers. Or engineering. Or financial analysis. Or medicine. Or research and development..."
Boy...You said it brother. 'Ol Rushbo and Quinn and a number of talk radio types keep on lauding this trend as "cleaning out the house". Yea. It's just some people who haven't kept up with the times, and they need to be retrained, and that this is a good thing.
They have no idea of the EMERGENCY that this situation is creating. When the recession hit, the first jobs to go were R&D. And ...I should know.
People can believe what they want. And they won't be persuaded to change their mind. That is, until theirmind hits the rock hard floor of reality. Then the taste of dirt becomes real.
Rushbo and all the others remind me of the Jews in Germany and Poland in the 1930's. They do so in that they are like big fat animals with their heads in the sand. They don't want to face an ugly trend. Sure, we can now all look back and say that it was obvious that Hitler was going to get rid of the Jews. But at that time, there were all kinds of warning signs. But no one wanted to pay attention to them.
I have to ask Rushbo...
How do you retrain an Aerospace Engineer with over twenty years experience? Or do you equate Rocket Engines with Buggy Whips?
How do you retrain an IT professional who specializes in Multidimensional matricies? OR is computers also equated to the buggy whip industry?
What about a middle manager with an MBA and thirty years experience in offshore manufacturing? Teach them what?
The illusion is that the lob losses are a normal effect of a growing technological adjustment in a society undergoing reconstruction. But it is just an illusion. Nothing more. What is actually occuring is something far more worrisome....
In the 1970's and the 1980's, America lost its Manufacturing Base.
In the 1980's and the 1990's, America lost it's Educational lead.
Now, in the 2000's, America is losing it's technically experienced work force.
This loss Will ONLY matter if and only if, America wishes to be a Nation that leads the globe in design, research and Manufacture. It does not matter if one looks at the globe as a whole, because the global need for technical employment will remain constant...our concern should be the regional need of America alone.
I can only conclude that 'Ol Rushbo is a closet Globalist. |

Teachers at the primary and secondary level require certification. Dont know where you are. In San Leandro, CA, you can certainly be a non-credentialed teacher. You are supposed to have a single (or multi) subject credential *or be in the process of getting one*. There are teachers that have *retired* never having received a teaching credential during their entire career though I suppose they were technically in the process of acquiring one.

The U.S. is helping the rest of the world work its way into wealth. That is in all of our interests. And it isn't a zero-sum game. American productivity, again fostered largely by intelligent use of technology, remains the highest in the world. That's likely to ensure we stay wealthy. Have you thought of becoming a pastry chef? Build up your skills and you should be able to find a niche...somewhere...maybe.

Called American Express Credit Card 800 number to get some information on my account.....
Initial Answering system - was in excellent English - until I selected an option and a human came on line....
Honestly - I could NOT understand enough of his murdered English to understand where the hell he could have been - but I assure you it was not in America..
I had to end conversation - and call in to another operator - who was not much better, but at least I could get the required action completed..
To whom has American Express farmed out their "Service" facilities?
