And let's face it, the Texas Air National guard is where rich kids fought in Vietnam. The National Guard is not fighting... Some of us are like that, but not most of us.
As for the Texas guard, it has been reported by people who were Bush's superiors that Bush asked to be sent to Vietnam, but had too few flight hours to qualify.
As for "the National guard is not fighting"...look at Iraq now -- and -- the fact that 10% of those that died in Vietnam were National Guard or Reserves.
ALSO -- as an aside -- People are not looking at the time line regarding all of this flack about Bush's service. Kerry is older than Bush. Some troop withdrawals actually started in 1969.
By the time Bush was assigned to Alabama -- the war was all but over. Bush was assigned to Alabama in October of 1972.
In that same month, October 1972, a tentative cease-fire agreement was reached. The accord called for the simultaneous withdrawal of U.S. troops and to be followed by a political settlement of South Vietnam's future.
The peace agreement was finalized and formally signed 4 months later on January 27, 1973...9 months before Bush was discharged.
