Bush to visit Fort Polk Tuesday
Associated Press | Feb 13, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush plans a visit next week to Fort Polk, home to a regiment due to return soon from a year of service in Iraq.

Bush will speak to military personnel at the base on Tuesday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Friday.

The 4,000-strong 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, in Iraq since last March, is due to return sometime in March or April. It is to be replaced by a brigade from the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, as part of a larger troop rotation announced earlier by the Pentagon.

The 2nd Armored, the oldest serving regiment on continuous active duty in the United States, is a lighter force than traditional armored cavalry regiments, and it has no tanks. Its heaviest vehicles are gun-mounted Humvee utility vehicles. The unit also has an aviation squadron.

Good old Fort Puke. My second daughter was born there and my first wife was from Diseaseville (Leesville), home of the good Fort. Glad that the President is going and not me. BTW I can say this honestly and without prejudice since I am a native Louisiana boy.

I wonder if C-Span will tape his speech and then show it at two A.M. after eight straight hours of Kerry stump appearances.

It's amazing that Fort Polk is still around. Back during the later part of Nam, talk was the post would be closed down. Guess it was too much of a good thing to let go :)

The 2nd ACR is my nephew's unit. At Christmas he said they're leaving Baghdad in March for Kuwait and should be stateside in April.

If there's a chance he'll be home early (in PA on leave) I better get going on having his car worked on. I put it in storage for him and when I drove it to the garage it was making some really bad noise in the engine somewhere. He'll be driving it back to LA.

You guys did great with all the hooahs! Can you believe the press said Fort Polk was a NG base? Why JRTC trains some of the best SOG in the world. I guess that was part of their scheme to make this look like he was kissing up to the guard and trying to dispel their AWOL claims...

Sheez...

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the news coverage of it. My unit's on North Fort, doing a JRTC rotation as our last bit of training before heading off to Iraq. No TV to watch, we only brought a couple of duffle bags of gear with us.
