CHICAGO - Pittsburgh is home to a new liberal funding organization that lists its priorities as the local environment, land use and "sustainability." However, its affiliations raise questions about its real purpose.

Known as the Tides Center for Pennsylvania, formerly the Tides Center for Western Pennsylvania, it is a creation of the Tides Foundation and Center, headquartered in San Francisco, and two Pennsylvania-based foundations -- the Vira Heinz Endowment and the Howard Heinz Endowment-- chaired by Teresa Heinz Kerry, heir to the Heinz food company fortune and wife of Democrat presidential contender Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

On the web site it gives her bio and mentions that she was the wife of Senator John Heinz. IT DOESN'T MENTION KERRY AT ALL!

Up until last summer or so, Teresa would refer to "my husband" and mean John Heinz. She's a flake.

Tides Foundation has initiated two efforts to support timely and critical peace and justice work.

Iraq Peace Fund
The Iraq Peace Fund, a short-term grantmaking effort, made grants to organizations working to organize and elevate the voices of peace and justice in response to the Bush administration's intention to attack Iraq. More>>

Democratic Justice Fund
The Democratic Justice Fund was launched by Tides Foundation, in collaboration with The Open Society Institute and other institutional and individual donors, to address three primary areas -- Protecting the civil liberties of all Americans; Supporting immigrant rights with a particular focus on strengthening the capacity of Arab, Muslim, South Asian and Sikh organizations; and Promoting alternative media voices that can frame the complex political, social and economic history informing today's international crises and expanding their influence on mainstream media.

The Democratic Justice Fund is the successor to the Tides 9/11 Fund-our rapid response effort that raised and distributed more than $600,000 to assist the working poor, help rebuild communities, and promote a just and peaceful national response in the immediate wake of September 11, 2001. More>>

Tides Statement for Peace
The Tides Community Responds to 9/11/01

Since the events of September 11, 2001, the Tides community has responded in a number of ways.

Tides Foundation has granted over $1.5 million to organizations doing timely and essential peace and justice work, including assisting the working poor and immigrant communities in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, promoting peaceful co-existence within diverse and potentially conflicting communities, guarding against the erosion of civil liberties, and elevating the voices of peace and justice in response to the administration's intention to attack Iraq. More on the Foundation's efforts>>

Tides Center has also done critical work to support a peaceful response to the crisis. Shortly following 9/11, Tides Center helped a group of victims' family members form September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, an advocacy organization seeking effective nonviolent responses to terrorism. These family members continue to be a powerful, persuasive voice in the growing movement to find alternatives to war.

And Groundspring.org (formerly eGrants.org) has played a key role in gathering, processing and granting more than $840,000 in online donations to support a wide range of peace and justice work

Our efforts at Tides are rooted in our over 26 years of working for progressive social change, and we feel privileged to be able to redouble our commitment to such work at this critical time.

Here are a few of the organizations we have been able support over the last year through the commitment and generosity of our partners in social change:

Thanks for the ping. This is just sickening. And criminal. Wish the DOJ could go after some of these money launderers and domestic terrorist trainers.

Thanks for the timely information, SoothingDave. I'm one of those pariahs who eats ketchup on anything except a good steak (ok, not anything, but a lot). I like Heinz the best, and I'm going to print your response up so I can show my wife that I'm not helping Kerry by using it. She's really been picking on me about using Heinz lately. I owe you one.

Good night! What a large number of pro-socialist, pro-communist causes Tides supports.

And the left pitches a fit about Halliburton? Don't make me laugh!
