Farmer begins campaign for Senate (Missouri 'Rat Alert!)

Missouri Treasurer Nancy Farmer formally launched her U.S. Senate campaign Thursday by repeatedly lambasting the man she sees as her chief opponent - President George W. Bush.

Only twice during her speech did Farmer mention the man she's hoping to oust, incumbent Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond, R-Mo. One of those times, it was to point out that Bond had voted Bush's way "98 percent of the time."

Farmer says she first got involved in politics in college, when she worked on the unsuccessful ratification effort for the Equal Rights Amendment.

Yeah, you've got a real future in staying a State Treasurer, there, Nancy.

Farmer's jabs at Bush also set her apart from the state's last Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate - former incumbent Jean Carnahan - who spent much of her campaign in 2002 emphasizing how much she agreed with the president and often voted his way.

But Farmer's assertive approach is in step with many national Democrats who, of late, have been directing most of their attacks against the president. Farmer has maintained for months that Bond is simply "a rubber stamp" for the president's agenda.

A spokesman for the Missouri Republican Party replied that Bond's record echoed the values of a majority of the state's voters, and that it's Farmer who is out of step.

"Here's a person who supports same-sex marriages, and we don't believe that most Missourians support that," said state GOP spokesman Paul Sloca.

That was true in the most recent Post-Dispatch poll, where 62 percent of the participants said they opposed "allowing same-sex couples the same legal benefits and protections now extended to married couples."

Just over half - 53 percent - backed the idea of a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriages.

But Farmer, who is married, said her legislative record in support of gay rights demonstrates her courage. "No matter how unpopular, I voted every time to protect the civil rights of all Missourians," she said. p> Ok, who do I want representing me?? Someone who COURAGEOUSLY goes against what Missourians want, or someone who votes with my values in mind? This woman is an idiot! Thank God she doesn't have a chance!!! Missouri ping

The sad thing (for them) is this is one of the Democrats' best chances at picking up a seat.

Kit bond is nothing if not a survivor...Been down before. Bounced back. IMO he will this time. If this squirrel Farmer is in favor of same-sex marriages, she is "toast" in the Ozarks. But then, most Dims are anyway...

"Referring to Bush, Farmer drew cheers when she declared, "Maybe we ought to shift his job overseas!""

See, Dems let things slip, about how they truly feel towards the US. If this ditz follows Dem policy, she will be soon openly calling for the US to subjugate itself to the the UN. I don't always agree with him; consider my vote going to Kit Bond, though(as usual).

Also, if I were Farmer, I wouldn't be crowing about my accomplishments as the Mo. Treasurer. The state finances are so screwed up, IMO, it is laughable. I wonder if this year they will try to seize state income tax refunds to cover the tab, like in the past.

Why? What makes you think she can defeat Kit Bond?

I don't think she can. That's why it's pitiful that this is one of the Democrats best chances. They have a shot at Republican open seat in Illinois and Oklahoma, incumbents in Alaska and (depending how thing work out) Pennsylvania -- and that's about it. They have a teacher challenging Ben Nighthorse Campbell and an unknown state senator challenging Jim Bunning. At least Nancy Farmer has been elected statewide before.

In the 1980s, she began a seven-year tenure as executive director for the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council in St. Louis.

A Central West-End Democrat. They're the worst kind.

Kit Bond is a slime/whore. I wish we could put in a real conservative candidate in the GOP slot here, but unfortunately it won`t happen.

I will again hold my nose in the general election and vote him back in, but I will not like it one bit.
