Poll: Proposed FR Rule Change about breaking news
Posted on 02/12/2004 8:58:45 AM PST by 1stFreedom
My post on the Kerry story was pulled. Why? Because before the story actually broke, someone posted a thread that indicated Drudge had a breaking a world exclusive story. (We all love the early warnings about a breaking drudge story, even if the story turns out to be about nothing.)
On this post, there were tons of posts speculating the cause, etc. The last time I looked there were 500+ posts.
I posted the story after Drudge broke it, and immediately the responses were relevant and not speculative.
My question to you is, shouldn't the older post be frozen, especially since there were 500 odd posts which were not dealing with actual story? Or would you rather freeze and remove the new post with relevant information and posts?
I don't care about MY posts being bumped. I've posted breaking stories from Drudge, and I'd expect than once the story actually comes through, my "early warning" post should be locked.
An alternative suggestion is for the moderator to EDIT the original post warning of the breaking news and to insert the actual story into the original post.
What do you think? (DU members, no need to try and influence this poll! LOL)

I agree with you. Some people (and I'm one) won't bother to look at a 500+ post thread--too much to wade through. I'd rather read the actual article, on its own thread.

We should go with the actual breaking news and not with Preliminary hints.
My least favorite is when someone posts at 9 am: "News conference at 2 PM."
You get 5 hours of fluff and then the actual news from the conference is undercut and sometimes putting up the actual news is not permitted.

The article you were trying to reach has been moved to Chat...
Just kidding.
But yes. You are right. I was looking for the entire story not 500 speculations of what the story MIGHT be about.

'tis a quandary. Should a Drudge ***BREAKING HARD!!!!! Nothing follows.*** ever qualify as "breaking news"?

You beat me to it! I likewise agree with the point, however. But you still gotta tweak 'im for going with a 'Breaking News' tag!

Nice whine.
Now predict how many times the Drudge story will be posted today.

I know it's not breaking news but I love the fact the NASCAR threads that are posted two days before a race stay up in the main forum.
To: 1stFreedom
There is a full history on the first thread, and freeper posts are worthy of reading vs. the convenience of having the "facts" posted at the beginning instead of in the replies.
It's a tough call, sometimes the "speculative" thread will be better, sometimes not.
Now Rush is talking about it- is that worth another thread?
