[history]
'Bush and I were lieutenants' George Bush and I were lieutenants and pilots in the 111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS), Texas Air National Guard (ANG) from 1970 to 1971. We had the same flight and squadron commanders (Maj. William Harris and Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, both now deceased). While we were not part of the same social circle outside the base, we were in the same fraternity of fighter pilots, and proudly wore the same squadron patch.

Why does the author seem to equate ANG with Reserve service?

As a 26 year veteran (22 in the ANG) and still on active duty in the ANG, in the Air Defense mission, I wholeheartedly endore what the good Colonel has stated. The 147th Fighter Wing (Lt. Bush's old unit) has an alert detatchment that is subordinate to my unit. We scramble those guys about every day. They are in constant peril from other aircraft (read: stupid pilots), mechanical malfunctions, bad weather, etc. They are Guardsmen just like me and we were Homeland Defense before it was "sexy" to be that.
So, GWB has his Homeland Defense bonifides and then some.

Technically, the AF Reserve and the ANG are reserves of the USAF. The first belongs solely to the US Government, the second belongs to the states first and then to the US Gov't. Generally speaking, the ANG has more than twice the combat capability of the Reserves.

Just struck me as strange that the author didn't distinguish between the two.

Frankly, I don't care what Kerry did/didn't do in the past.
What I care about is what he would do NOW, as President. Based on his actions and words since the campaigning started, I do not trust him. He is a two-faced liar, like most politicians, democratic, liberal, republican, etc. For that reason, I would never vote for him.
What I HAVE SEEN PRESIDENT BUSH DO, and what I know he is doing quietly about corruption in the government, waste, fraud, etc., I would vote for him for at least one more term.
As I wrote to a very close friend, these words apply to the Presidential situation as well.
"Everyone's all about words. I am all about deeds. SHOW ME!"
