OMG!! They introduced it as an emergency bill, meaning that it goes into effect as soon as it's signed! However, I don't believe they'll get the 2/3rds vote to have it pass as an emergency bill. If any Republican legislators support this, they'll be unemployed after November 2.

If it passes as an emergency bill, the damage will have been done before a Referendum can be placed on the ballot to repeal the bill - there is no way to retreive the millions of DL's that will have been issued by that time.

If it doesn't pass as an emergency bill - Cedillo will re-introduce it as a "regular" bill, which means it can't go into effect until 1 January 2005. We'll have the referendum qualified by then - and the law will be held up until after the next election where this Referndum will appear.

Licenses for illegals is a great idea!

Listen to me again

All illegals should be encouraged to get their licenses!

And don't you dare argue with me, because, you see, I have a plan.

It's quite simple.

And quite elegant.

Simply herd them into the busses behind the building when they show up to get their licenses, and they could be in Tijuana by the next morning (nightfall for San Diego and L.A.). Have the INS greet them at home if the busses get full.

Same for college attendance.

Existing law makes it unlawful for a person to drive a motor vehicle upon a highway unless that person holds a valid driver's license issued under the Vehicle Code, and provides proof of financial responsibility.

This bill would express the intent of the Legislature to enact appropriate legislation that improves the safety of all California residents while operating motor vehicles upon our highways by ensuring that all drivers of motor vehicles are properly licensed, tested, and maintain proof of financial responsibility.

What?? Since when does anyone have to be financially responsible to drive?

*Ping*!

They are introducing the bill as an emergency bill so that the law takes effect immediately.

Enough of this. Download a petition and collect signatures for the Save Our State Initiative.

It will deny public benefits to any applicants who aren't in the United States legally, requiring public employees who distribute those benefits to verify the immigration status of everyone, regardless of race or national origin, before benefits can be given. It will also prevent illegal aliens from getting driver's licenses that could otherwise indicate legal residency and qualify them for public benefits. And finally, it will prevent public agencies from using unverified foreign ID cards (such as the Matricular Consular) for identity purposes in California.

598,000 signatures are needed. The deadline for turning in petitions is April 15, 2004 to put the initiative on the November ballot.

The one point nobody ever seems to make in this argument is that it's perfectly legal for anyone to drive in this country on a Mexican drivers license.

If you fly into SFO or LAX from Mexico and go through Customs and Immigration, you can go to any rental car counter at the airport, show them your major credit card and a valid drivers license from any state in Mexico and they will gladly rent you a car, which you can legally drive on any public road in the United States.

Anyone who comes here ILLEGALLY, who has a valid Mexican drivers license can LEGALLY purchase insurance and drive a car here.

This isn't about highway safety and it isn't about insurance. It's about providing cover for people who break our laws. Any politician who votes for SB1160 should be jailed as an accessory to immigration fraud.
