Why don't they get how how can the conservatives not see the truth when it is hanging in front of them. I have studied dictators. I have ingested too much false and unverified information to go on without talking out. Bush is the real dictaor here. I admit that Saddam Hussien was an evil man and that he horrible things, but our actions against him were completely uncalled for. Why did we invade Iraq to begin with? Was it for those ever elusive weopons of mass destruction? Or was it for a more personal gain? Perhaps oil? I challange any person out there to tell me why. If you any of you can give me a verified answer i will beleive them. But until then i will accept the liberal answer. I also challange all of you to prove to prove that you are strong enough to leave this here without having to run off and tell "mommy".

My family LIVED under a dictator, friend. Der Führer himself, Mr. Adolf Hitler, to be exact. Allow me to regale you with a short story, because this forms a very large part of why I am a conservative.

The Third Reich managed to invade every non-neutral country on the European continent during the Second World War. One of those countries was Greece. In the forties Greece was much like Poland had been in 1939: backward, mostly agrarian, and no match whatsoever for the might of Nazi Germany. Despite a heroic attempt by the British to hold them off, the Germans had little trouble crossing the border and overrunning the entire country.

My grandparents, who lived in a small village outside of Sparta, had the "pleasure" of living under these invaders. The Germans imprisoned my mothers grandfather. They kicked her aunt and her family out of their house and turned it into a headquarters. Then, they had the gall of forcing my aunt to come back and cook for them.

During the occupation the Greek Communists hid in the mountains and would occasionally stage guerilla attacks on the Germans. Rather than attack them, the Nazis would round up between five and fifty Greek peasants for each German killed and shoot them. You might take this to mean that I consider the Communists heroes: rest assured, I do not. After the Germans were eventually defeated, Greece fell into a civil war, and the Communists' actions were no less bloody than those of the Nazis a few years before.

Eventually, of course, the Nazis left Greece, but not before destroying most public records and committing heinous atrocities. To this day my mother doesn't have a birth certificate (only a baptismal certificate). It's been hell for her to get things we take for granted, like a drivers license and a marriage license.

You can click here to read about the village of Kalavryta, where the Germans burned the village and then machinegunned all men and boys over 12 as a reprisal against the Greek Resistance. This was what it was like for the years of Hell living under the Nazi dictator.

So why am I a conservative? Growing up I listened to all of the tales my relatives would tell me of Nazi occupation, from memories that are no doubt fresh to this day. I learned the importance of freedom and liberty and the danger of governments that have become too powerful. I learned the importance of family and religion and of the evil that inevitably arises when either one is compromised or weakened. Most of all, I learned that the naive, wishing for peace, is the surest possible way to encourage an aggressor. My relatives left Greece in the mid 1950's for this great land, and I understand full well why America stands for democracy and liberty -- and the need to vigorously defend both, even undo death.

Your characterization of our current President as a dictator is at the least misguided, at the most vile and offensive. We live in a Republic where we can vote for our leaders. We don't have black-garbed Schutzstaffel breaking in our homes in the middle of the night and grabbing our loved ones for interrogation -- or worse. That sort of thing didn't just happen in the movies -- it really happened, and people are dead now who should be alive. We don't have 1930's-era putsches where unpopular people suddenly turn up dead, or massive Stalinesque purges. Were the entire population of, say, Kansas to suddenly disappear, then you might have a point. Until then, the comparison is unwarranted.
