NY Times Managing Editor Who Resigned in Aftermath of Scandal Says He'll Write Media Column

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Former New York Times managing editor Gerald Boyd said Tuesday he'll write a weekly syndicated column to help people understand how newsroom decisions are made. Boyd and executive editor Howell Raines resigned last year in the aftermath of a scandal over former Times reporter Jayson Blair, who fabricated and exaggerated parts of stories. How the matter was handled generated widespread criticism and questions about newsroom operations.

"I just think the more we can as journalists try to explain what happens in terms of decision-making, to pull back curtains and describe what goes on in newsrooms or in journalism in general, the better we are," Boyd told The Associated Press.

The column for Universal Press Syndicate will debut in March. Boyd also recently joined Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in a non-teaching position, and is writing a memoir, due in 2005.

"I wanted to do everything I could to try to be a positive force in journalism and try to begin to deal with issues that I saw as important, such as credibility issues, such as leadership issues and issues involving diversity," he said.

Appointed in 2001, Boyd was the first black to hold the managing editor post at the Times. As deputy managing editor for news, he oversaw the 2000 Pulitzer Prize-winning series "How Race is Lived in America."

Isn't this the same as a convicted child molester getting out after 10 years in the slammer and saying he wants to give back to society by opening a day care center?

Pathetic.

or maybe decisions work on the basis of:

Who boned Mo Dowd

We haven't met our quota on Bush bashing this week

If Krugman took his meds today or not

or if we have enough "tokens" in the newsroom.

In a related note, disgraced former US Senator Bob Toricelli will be contributing a syndicated column on ethical dilemnas faced by elected officials.
