Barring a successful last-minute appeal, a convicted murderer who has spent 19 years on death row is set to die this week -- California's first execution in two years.
Kevin Cooper, who was convicted in the 1983 hacking deaths of four people and is to be executed at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday at San Quentin Prison, has won support from death penalty opponents including Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, religious leaders and Hollywood actors.

The 9th District trumped the execution temporarily.
