PANYNJ Cheers Ban On Large Jets At Teterboro
February 9, 2004
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) cheered a measure passed by Congress that reinforces a ban on aircraft weighing more than 100,000 pounds from Teterboro Airport and ends a dispute that began when Boeing sought permission to land the BBJ there (BA, Jan. 5, 2001/). Congress included the measure in the transportation appropriations legislation that was adopted as a part of a much larger government-wide omnibus spending bill (BA, Jan. 26/35). The language, which prohibits FAA from using any of its funding to lift weight limitations at Teterboro, was included at the behest of Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.), who has championed efforts of anti-noise and anti-growth advocates in the communities surrounding the airport.
"With the enactment of my legislation, we have banned the 737 Boeing Business jet from Teterboro Airport and sent a strong message to those who seek to destroy our quality of life: 'We don't want your jumbo jets in our backyards and we never will," Rothman said. PANYNJ praised Rothman's efforts along with those of New Jersey Sens. Frank Lautenberg (D) and Jon Corzine (D) for supporting the measure that "will protect the citizens of Bergen County and keep Teterboro Airport operating as a general aviation facility."
The Port Authority, which had feared that FAA was considering granting the BBJ an exemption from the weight restrictions at Teterboro, said it had fought such a move to protect the airport infrastructure as well as the surrounding community. "The Port Authority has successfully defended this limit against challenges from the aviation industry," PANYNJ noted.
Groups such as the National Business Aviation Association opposed the measure, noting that FAA has proposed "a fair and reasonable solution." FAA had released a proposal last summer to develop a "uniform national policy" on weight-based restrictions that establish a process for airports to take before they could implement weight restrictions (BA, July 7/6). PANYNJ vowed to fight the NPRM, saying a reversal in the weight restrictions would "require major upgrades to Teteboro's infrastructure"(BA, Aug. 4/47).
The Port Authority noted that the ban on larger aircraft is one of several steps it has taken to protect the nearby communities from the impact of Teterboro's operations. Other steps include the ban on scheduled airlines, a ban on Stage 1 and continued support for another Rothman bill to ban Stage 2 aircraft.
I wouldn't deliver a bucket of pee if the place was on fire. Let them enjoy the utopia of North Jersey in absolute silence.
I agree with your comments about Teterboro. The place is something out of some impoverished African dictorship.
