The Odd Separation of British Church and State
Oregon Magazine ^ | February 1, 2004 | Larry Leonard

[T]he Guardian (a British newspaper) reported an attack on Prime Minister Tony Blair by the Church of England. The Bishop of Durham, Tom Wright, said that in participating in the “attack” on Iraq, Blair had acted like a “white vigilante.

Blair has, according to the church official, joined with the group of “religious conservatives” surrounding the U.S. President, George Bush, and is espousing a very strange distortion of Christianity – particularly since, through Iraq’s reconstruction, many would gain financially.

Let’s look at a couple of those ideas a little more closely.

First, what is the Church of England?

Well, once upon a time, an English king wanted to divorce his latest wife, and the Church of Rome said that enough was enough.

It didn’t approve of divorce, and was tired of annulling, on the basis of "failure to consummate," the marriages of English kings who had a flock of children.

But, that sort of thing is not evidence in support of an Act of God as the reason for the procreation.

Heirs were there. Even the Pope knew how it had happened....(Snip)

Great article!!

My favorite lines:

In a Hollywood divorce, both partners should be beheaded. Within three years, that would eliminate every liberal in the film business, and dramatically improve the content of modern movies.

LOL!!

Pretty much Barbra Stresand

Well technically correct, she was his latest, and also his first and only at the time

It didn’t approve of divorce,

The Church approved divorces all the time. It matter of power not morality.

and was tired of annulling, on the basis of "failure to consummate," the marriages of English kings who had a flock of children.

Interesting they should be so tired of something they'd never done. (The only previous annulment of an English King's marriage was without issue, and probably unconsummated)

It was a different matter if you were the King of France or the daughter of the Pope, in those cases the Church was only too eager to oblige, even in the face of offspring.

The real reason Henry couldn't get the divorce was that Katherine's nephew, Emperor Charles, had the Pope under his thumb. (Just another case of the woman having an advantage in the divorce court)
